The trend of planting designs has changed in accordance with increasing public interest and demand. To keep pace with the trend, this study aims to suggest the module-based technique for planting design, using a concept of modular planting which has been actively used abroad. It supports the standardization and efficiency of plant design process by applying the concept of modular planting also it provide the client to choose what they want. In this study to develop module-based technique for planting design, it is essential for understanding of planting landscape and setting up the basic planting structure. This being so, planting structure is systematized by vertical layers and horizontal distribution of plants. For the purpose of this study, the basic framework of the study is to set the unit area of the planting space and to use plantable plants. The unit area of the planting space is set to four square meters(2x2 m) for the diversity of small and medium sized plants—shrubs, perennials, grass and groundcover—in the recent planting trend. The vertical layers consist of four layers—overstory, midstory, understory and ground layer—and they form groups of two to four, with 11 possible combinations in total. The horizontal distribution can be composed by different vegetation types such as shrubs, perennials, grass and groundcover. In Finally, these basic planting structures include ratio of green coverage of each layer for module-based planting design. Therefore, propose the basic module of various types of planting structures and selected plants from the module. However, the selection of the plant is required to consider the seasonal variation, location condition as well as mutual competition conditions. This study has significance in that it confirms the possibility of module-based planting design through the vegetation structure. Therefore, it can be used as a basis for finding the new planting design method that differs from the existing ones.
