The 2014 Energy Consumption Survey of Korea demonstrates that the use of electricity accounts for 84% of the total primary energy consumption in office buildings, and of which 47% is consumed for space heating and cooling. Since office buildings generally have high cooling loads due to solar radiation entering into a space and internal heat gains from lights, appliances, and occupants, the performance of ventilation has become a significant element affecting indoor cooling load reduction. However, as the use of natural ventilation has been abandoned in favor of mechanical ventilation providing more concise control to the indoor thermal environment, serious problems start to occur including poor indoor air quality, the occupants’ thermal discomfort, and increased energy consumption. In order to solve these problems, the interest in hybrid ventilation, using different features of both natural and mechanical ventilation, has been continuously increased. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the energy saving potential of hybrid ventilation applied in an office building. This study quantitatively analyzed the energy consumptions of a conventional mechanical ventilation system and a hybrid ventilation system by performing whole-building energy simulations. It also investigated the energy consumption characteristics of both systems using the Inverse Model Toolkit(IMT)’s linear regression analysis method. The D Tower located in the central business district of Jongno–gu was selected for the investigation, and its facility operational status and annual energy consumption data for 2016 were obtained. The baseline energy simulation representing the actual energy consumption of the building was performed with TRNSYS, a transient simulation program. The simulation results were then evaluated with the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol(IPMVP)’s measuring and verifying process. When retaining the reliability of the energy simulation, the IPMVP process demonstrated a mean bias error(MBE) of 0.056% and a coefficient of variation of the root mean squared error(CV(RMSE)) of 5.12%. This illustrated that the baseline model of the conventional mechanical ventilation system was fit to represent the actual energy consumption data of the building within the acceptable error realm. For the alternative model representing the hybrid ventilation system, the ambient temperature was selected as the main control variable, switching between the natural and mechanical ventilation systems. The alternative model’s air flow simulation was conducted with TRNFLOW, which can be used in conjunction with TRNSYS to analyze the effect of natural ventilation on the energy consumption. As a result of the alternative energy simulation, the hybrid ventilation system controlled by the ambient temperature saved 25.40% of the cooling energy consumption when using the conventional mechanical ventilation system. In addition to investigating the energy savings from the hybrid ventilation system, a linear regression analysis of the IMT method was performed to determine the energy consumption characteristics of the baseline and of the alternative energy model. The cooling slope, the cooling balance point temperature, and the base energy consumption of the baseline and of the alternative were analyzed in a linear regression analysis. As a result of the active air flow in the office, the amount of the base energy consumed in the building was reduced by about 40% from the baseline, and the cooling balance point temperature was also raised from 13.3°C to 17.1°C. The result of the linear regression analysis demonstrated that hybrid ventilation and the natural ventilation mode allowed the office to maintain indoor thermal comfort temperatures ranging between 20°C and 26°C, which deviated from the existing mechanically ventilated conditions(baseline: BPT for heating=12.9°C, BPT for cooling=13.3°C; alternative: BPT for heating=12.9°C, BPT for cooling=17.1°C). This study evaluated the energy performance of a hybrid ventilation system controlled by the ambient temperature conditions. Dynamic energy simulations were performed to analyze the energy consumption savings quantitatively, and the energy consumption characteristics were evaluated with a linear regression analysis. In further research, the influence of the humidity and indoor air pollutant concentration should be carefully examined to optimize the energy consumption while securing indoor air quality and improving the occupants’ thermal comfort.
