This study aims to examine the effects of foot-ankle exercise using a Thera-Band on gross motor function and balance of children with spastic paraplegia. The subjects of this study were 16 children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. They had a history of premature birth and met the conditions of this study. They were equally assigned to an experimental group and a control group with matching design. The experimental group received existing conservative physical therapy along with foot-ankle exercise and the control group received existing conservative physical therapy only for a total of 45 minutes, twice per week, for a total of eight weeks. This study employed Korean version of the Gross Motor Function Measure (K-GMFM) in order to evaluate motor functions of children with spastic paraplegia, and for evaluation of their balance, Pediatric balance scale (PBS) and Biorescue were utilized. For statistical processing SPSS 22.0 ver. was used and a significance level was set to 0.05. In the experimental group that conducted foot-ankle exercise, D domain (standing) and E domain (walking, jumping, and hopping) and the sum of D and E domains of GMFM significantly differed between before and after the exercise and there was significant difference between before and after the exercise in balance scale for children. In addition, there was significant difference between before and after the exercise in limit of stability, left, right, front, and rear range of movement, and total movement area. The control group saw significant improvement in D domain (standing), E domain (walking, jumping, and hopping), and the sum of D and E domains in evaluation of gross motor functions and there was significant difference between before and after the exercise in balance scale for children. D domain (standing), E domain (walking, jumping, an hopping), the sum of D and E domains, balance scale for children, limit of stability, left and front range of movement, and total movement area were significantly different between the groups. The above results show that treatment including foot-ankle exercise using a Thera-Band improved motor function and balance of children with spastic paraplegia more than existing conservative physical therapy. Thus, continuous research on foot-ankle exercises for improvement in functions and balance of cerebral palsy children is necessary. The researcher expects that this study will be utilized as basic data for an effective home treatment program that cerebral palsy children can perform in a simple and easy manner.
