The goal of this paper is to build the theological basis of the healing ministry. This paper is a product of researches on healing ministry by comparing the cases in the Bible and church histories from the early churches to Korean churches. As the results, the healing ministry proves to be essential to gain church growth again in these days. Diseases are not only personal problems but also the social environment in which the natural harmony is broken. Therefore, the healing ministry is for the full recovery of human spirit, soul and body as in the kingdom of God. That is, a born-again child who has restored the relationship with God father changes the society into the kingdom of God by his or her ethical life and reaches the full salvation by restoring the ecosystem and nature.
The Old Testament testifies to the healing by showing restoration of the relationship with God and by describing the healing as a promise to the coming kingdom of God ruled by the Messiah. In the New Testament, the healing was one main focus of Jesus' public ministry and the reality and sign of the coming of the kingdom of God. Jesus healed the sick, gave power to the disciples, trained them and ordered to continue the healing ministry. The apostles who received the Holy Spirit on the Pentecost bore the testimony to the atonement of Jesus, the wounded healer. The Spirit who gives freedom has continued the
healing ministry through the Church, the body of the Christ, by giving the spiritual gift of healing.
Two-thousand-year-old history of the Church testifies to the fact that the healing ministry as the essence of the ministry of Jesus Christ has been kept on via her, the body of Jesus Christ. The healing ministry in the early Church was the sign of the kingdom of God, functioned as a critical factor of the church growth and survived the prosecution showing the vital force. The Church, however, became indifferent to the healing after Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity as the national religion of the Roman empire and the Church got secularized. The Middle Age Church allowed the healing ministry to degenerate into the cleric-centered sacrament. The pilgrimage, bones and relics of the saints came to gain a mystical and superstitious character. On the contrary, the Reformers focused on salvation of the spirit thus remaining passive to the healing, which in work and faith (2 Samuel 22:1-2). Patients who came to the monastery recuperated in their prayer and work and returned to their families and churches. The director healed a lot of patients by her anatripsis prayer in which she tapped the diseased area according to her gift of words of knowledge (2 Kings 13:16). She ordains the soldiers of the Cross in the overnight prayer meeting for the nation and the people on the 1st and 15th of every month. Jasil Choi, born to an unbelieving family, went through a change of hearth with the help of pastor Sungbong Yi and became a minister of the Assemblies of God after graduating from the Full Gospel Theological Seminary. She led the prayer movement of the Korean Church in Osanli Fast Prayer Center in a cooperation with pastor Yongki (David) Cho of the Full Gospel Church. A church revival was made by personal spiritual experience and the spiritual wake-up of a family and the society through a fast prayer (Judge 58:6-8). Choi’s healing ministry is a triple blessing in that it is associated with experience of the presence of the Holy Spirit by the tongues, and spelling out of the demons leading to the rebirth of the spirit, and a change in the environment and the restoration the physical health (3John 1:2). Sinae Hyun, having suffered a chronic disease, was healed in her faith and called to serve as healer. She served as deaconess of Chungam Presbyterian Church and practiced healing in Bokeum Evangelism Center. Because she was layperson, she allowed a pastor to preach and only led the prayer meeting herself. The deaconess put her hand on a patient saying “believe and you will be healed as you believe (Mark 16:15-18)” in her prayer. She encouraged her patients to
have faith in the power of the name of Jesus Christ and healed them by her gift of words of knowledge and prophesy. It has been proved that the healing ministry as an essence of Jesus’ ministry is a way to the revival of the Korean Church which are on the way to the fast decline. Jin Jeon, Jasil Choi and Sinae Hyun drew on the Holy Spirit and co-worked by their respective gifts in their nondenominational, united ministry such as the prayer rally for the nation and the people. Their work will be the driving force for the church revival. The female healing ministry are very powerful in the modern Korean Church.
