Austenitic stainless steel generally is generally used because it has good low temperature toughness, weldability and corrosion resistance. For this reason, it is mostly used as corrosion resistant materials in harsh environment in addition to various industrial fields such as off-shore structure, nuclear power plant and petrochemical plant. However, the ways to reduce the prime cost have been studied because the use of stainless steel increases following development of off-shore plant industry and the price of nickel also increases. One of the ways is dissimilar welding between austenitic stainless steel and carbon steel. So, the study to obtain good quality of dissimilar weld metals is needed because of cracking by the difference of material properties and degradation of mechanical and corrosion properties by intermetallic compound. In this study, characteristics of dissimilar weld metals between austenitic stainless steel(ASTM 316L) and carbon steel(ASTM A516 Gr.70) made with GTAW and FCAW were evaluated in terms of microstructure, phase analysis, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Dissimilar weld metals with GTAW and FCAW are solidified on FA mode. Microstructure of weld metals consisted of mostly vermicular ferrite and some lathy ferrite. Ferrite content of FCA weld metals was higher than that of GTA weld metals, and that of GTA weld metals increased whereas that of FCA weld metals decreased with increasing heat inputs. Based on EDS analysis, Creq/Nieq values of GTA weld metals increased because deposit of filler metal increased, whereas that of FCA weld metals decreased because dilution with base metal increased with increasing heat inputs. Tensile strength of GTA weld metals increased whereas that of FCA weld metals decreased with increasing heat inputs, and that of GTA weld metals was much higher than that of FCA weld metals. It was because side arm spacing of FCA weld metals was greater but ferrite content was much higher than that of GTA weld metals. Impact absorbed energy of FCA weld metals was much lower than that of GTA weld metals. Impact absorbed energy of FCA weld metals increased whereas that of GTA weld metals decreased with increasing heat inputs. Hardness of FCA weld metals in heat input 10.4kJ/cm was higher than that of GTA weld metals. In salt spray test, both GTA and FCA weld metals were corroded in only carbon steel. Deposited metals weren’t corroded because those included more than 12% Cr despite dilution. In corrosion test progressing up to 20 hours, the weight of GTA weld metals changed very little, and that of FCA weld metals slightly decreased because pitting corrosion by Cl ion occurred.
