Fiber reinforced composites have the advantages of high specific strength, specific stiffness, corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance and fatigue properties compared with metal materials. In many cases, fiber reinforced composite materials are used alone in the design of major structures. However, fiber reinforced composite materials are increasingly used in connection with metal materials due to economical efficiency and technical difficulties. In this paper, the behavior of a single lap joint between a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and steel plates which are bonded together by an adhesive was studied. Experimental measurements were made on how failure modes and bonding strength varied depending on types of adhesives, orientations of carbon fibers in CFRP laminates, and test temperature. Three epoxy adhesives with glass transition temperatures of 58, 78, and 98℃, respectively were used to investigate failure modes and bonding strength depending on the types of adhesives. In order to investigate the effects of fiber orientations in CFRP laminates, they were fabricated so that the angles between fiber and load directions were 0, ±60, ±70, and ±80°. The joints were tested at 28, 68, 88 and 108℃ to investigate the effects of test temperature on the behavior of the joints. A vacuum bag molding process was used to fabricate the test specimens. The failure modes and the failure loads were measured from tensile tests on the joints. Tensile test results showed that only two types of failure modes occurred, which are adhesive failure and stock-break failure. Failure modes changed depending on types of adhesives, fiber orientations of CFRP laminates, and test temperature. The lower the glass transition temperature of adhesives, the higher chance of adhesive failure existed. The higher the glass transition temperature of adhesives, the higher chance of stock-break failure in CFRP laminates existed. This is because when the test temperature is higher than the glass transition temperature of the adhesive, failure is likely to occur at the bonded area. The larger the fiber orientations in CFRP laminates, the higher chance of stock-break failure of CFRP laminates existed. The smaller the fiber orientations, the higher chance of adhesive failure existed. This is because the tensile strength of CFRP laminates becomes smaller than the bonding strength of the adhesive joints as the fiber orientations in CRRP laminates increase. When adhesive failure occurred, the bonding strength was calculated. The bonding strength decreased with the increase of the test temperature, and it was found that the decrease of bonding strength was the greatest before and after the glass transition temperature of the adhesive. The bonding strength also decreased with the increase of fiber orientations in CFRP laminates. This is because deformation of CFRP laminates increased as the fiber orientations of CFRP laminates increases, which also decreased bonding strength of joints. Ultimate strength in tension of CFRP laminates was calculated when stock-break failure occurred. The larger the bonding strength of the adhesives between CFRP and steel plates, the larger the ultimate strength of CFRP laminates occurred. The same tendency was observed at various test temperatures and fiber orientations of CFRP laminates. In this study, the behavior of a single lap joint between CFRP and steel plates was investigated according to the types of adhesives, the fiber orientations of CFRP laminates, and the test temperature. The results of this study will be helpful in designing the bonded joints between carbon fiber reinforced composite material and steel in various environments.
