Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is currently considered as a potential next-generation alternative energy technology because of the high energy density and high abundance of hydrogen in nature. Nowaday, high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs, working at 150-200 ℃) become attractive for the application of tri-generation (heat+cooling+electricity) due to their operating temperature. In addition, in order to solve some of the problems of low temperature PEMFCs based on Nafion® (CO tolerance, kinetics, water management, etc.) the development is being accelerated. HT-PEMFCs operated at high temperature and with no external humidification have been proven to provide several benefits compared to low temperature operation, such as increased kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction, greater tolerance of the platinum catalyst to CO and better heat management as the cooling and hydration system can be simplified. The main difficulty in commercialization for HT-PEMFCs is, however, to develop proton-exchange membranes with high proton conductivity, high chemical stability, and high mechanical strength at high temperatures and low humidification. Development of thermally stable polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) with higher proton conductivity as well as mechanical stability is a key challenge in commercializing PEMFCs operating above 100 ℃. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes exhibit good electrochemical and physicochemical characteristics at temperatures up to 200 ℃. The proton conductivity of phosphoric acid (PA) doped PBI membranes highly depends on the acid doping level (ADL) of the membranes, defined as the mole number of PA per molar repeating unit of the polymer. Many methods have been explored to increase the ADL to improve the conductivity of PA-doped PBI membrane. Mecerreyes et al. reported a method to fabricate porous PBI membrane using soft template such as dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, diphenyl phthalate and triphenyl phosphate as porogen. However, high doping level often causes excess swelling or even complete loss of the mechanical strength of the membranes due to the strong plasticizing effect of the dopant. In chapter 3 and 4, thermal cured asymmetric porous PBI membranes were prepared in order to increase the mechanical strength than porous PBI membranes as well as proton conductivity for high proton conductivity. The ADL of the PA doped thermal cured asymmetric porous PBI membranes has been increased up to 15.27 mole/r.u. (9.5 mole/r.u. for dense m-PBI) by keeping tensile strength above 4.4 MPa after PA doping. Solid alkaline fuel cells (SAFCs) use anion exchange polymers for electrolyte membranes. Compared to fuel cells using proton exchange polymers the direction of ion movement is opposite which is from cathode to anode. The hydroxyl ion movement mitigates overpotential for oxygen reduction reaction as well as water flooding at cathode. In addition, they overcome the disadvantages of alkaline fuel cells such as formation of carbonate precipitates, leakage of liquid KOH electrolyte, system complexity and so on by using solid electrolytes. According to the recent works, alkaline doped PBI membranes exhibited good ionic conductivity, acceptable mechanical strength, high thermal stability, and low methanol permeability, which make it interesting as electrolyte in alkaline fuel cell and water electrolyzers. In chapter 5, a highly ion-conductive and durable asymmetric porous polymer electrolyte membrane based on ion solvating PBI was developed for SAFC. The ionic conductivity of KOH doped asymmetric porous PBI membranes showed 0.09 S cm-1 and high chemical stability. However, the long-term operation of alkaline doped PBI membranes can be affected by the progressive release of the doped alkali, resulting in a decrease in ionic conductivity. In chapter 6, new anion conducting polymers were synthesized using quaternized polymers as ionomer binder to improve the retention of doped alkali in the PBI membrane and gas permeability. The quaternized polybenzimidazoles (QPBIs) having quaternized intermediate 4-methyl-4-glycidylmor-pholin-4-ium chloride (MGMC) in the main-chain and/or in the side group were synthesized for use as anion conducting ionomer binder for SAFCs. In addition, the QPBIs were crosslinked with a crosslinker to improve the mechanical strength and chemical stability. The crosslinked QPBI showed high ionic conductivity as 0.065 S cm-1 and higher MEA performance as 20% than commercial PBI ionomer.
