This study investigates the role of pharmacists as pharmaceutical experts, in promoting successful implementation of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in Korea, by employing the national network of veterinary pharmacies. AAT is a therapeutic method involving interactions with animals, known to have physiological and psychological benefits for children, youth, and elderly individuals living alone. Studies conducted on domestic and foreign research, found that AAT had psychological therapeutic effects on depression, dementia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and schizophrenia, and can also relieve physical pain. In particular, this study identifies AAT as a complementary and alternative method of effective treatment for diseases that have proven difficult to treat using traditional therapies, or have poor prognosis despite treatment. Until recently, only private organizations offered AAT. It has not yet been professionalized. It is neither a well-known nor widely used method. Thus, its reliability has not yet been established in Korea and the accessibility of AAT for patients is extremely limited. The results of this study confirm that therapeutic effects of AAT on pain, depression, dementia, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), etc., have been recognized by national and international research. Moreover, it was found that approximately 600 hospitals in the U.S. currently offer AAT. Considering the needs of the current situation in Korea, we suggest that pharmacists play an active role, as professional healthcare providers, in introducing and promoting AAT as complimentary therapy to enhance the outcomes of psychiatric therapies, thus contributing to national health promotion. In order to raise general awareness about the benefits of AAT and successfully introduce it as an effective complementary therapy, it is necessary for well-accepted healthcare providers such as pharmacists to be involved in clinical trials in order to demonstrate AAT’s efficacy. To do this, awareness should be raised among pharmacists, who have the potential to meet patients’ demand for AAT via veterinary pharmacies in their respective communities. Utilizing the network of almost 2000 veterinary pharmacies to establish nationwide accessibility of AAT for the general population and professionalize AAT services under the management of pharmacists as professional healthcare providers is a practical approach to successfully introducing AAT and popularizing its use. This is a necessary step to introduce AAT and popularize its use, for which pharmacists’ active involvement is essential for successful implementation of AAT for the benefit of patients, especially those patients for whom traditional methods have not been effective.
