The purpose of this study was to conduct a survey-based investigation with a total of 282 parents, who have elementary school children and are using eco-friendly agricultural products in some parts of the Gyeonggi-do province, on their general characteristics, general awareness of school meal service, awareness of eco-friendly agricultural products and awareness of eco-friendly agricultural products in school meals, and analyze the level of awareness according to the parents age and their children’s gender and school grade (lower grade, upper grade) so as to use the study findings as basic data for expanding eco-friendly school meal service to junior high and high schools in addition to elementary schools. According to the general characteristics of the survey subjects, there were 133 parents who have male children (47.2%) and 149 who have female children (52.8%); 151 parents who have children in lower grade (53.5%) and 131 who have children in upper grade (46.5%). As for their age, there were 142 parents who are 39 or younger (63.8%) and 140 parents who are 40 or older (49.6%). Examining the parents’ interest in school food service, it was found that 61.3% of them are interested in school meals, and that parents with male children are more interested in school meals than parents with female children(p<.05), while parents with upper grade children are more interested in school meals than parents with lower grade children. As for the satisfaction level of parents for school meals, it was found that 78.8% of them were satisfied with the school meals, and that parents with male children were relatively more satisfied with the school meals than parents with female children. In the category of parents’ experience in participating in school meal service management, results showed that parents with female children have more experience in participating in school meal service management than parents with male children. In terms of areas where parents want to participate in school meal service, results showed that parents wish to participate in the following areas in the said order; observing school meal service events, monitoring school meals, checking school meal ingredients, and evaluating school meal ingredient suppliers. It was also found that the aspect parents regarded most important for school meal service is the nutrition aspect of meal service, followed by the sanitary aspect, the high-quality aspect, the safety aspect and the taste aspect. In the category of awareness of eco-friendly agricultural products, survey results showed that parents with female children are more aware of the terms for eco-friendly agricultural products compared to parents with male children, and that 38% of the parents are aware of the labels and certification standards for eco-friendly agricultural products. Examining whether parents check the certification mark when purchasing eco-friendly agricultural products, it was found that 151 parents ‘check’(53.5%) while 131 parents ‘do not check’(46.5%) the certification mark, showing no significant difference. 258 parents (91.5%) responded that ‘there are differences’ between eco-friendly agricultural products and general agricultural products, indicating that most parents are aware of the difference. Among the 258 parents who responded that ‘there are differences,’199 parents marked the‘safety of food’ (77.1%) as the aspect of difference between eco-friendly agricultural products and general agricultural products. In the category of awareness of eco-friendly agricultural products in school meal service, it was found that 204 parents are ‘aware’ (72.3%) that eco-friendly agricultural products are being used in elementary school meals, while 78 parents are not aware of it. Examining the parents view on the advantages and disadvantages of using eco-friendly agricultural products, ‘assurance of safety’received the highest response from 213 parents (75.5%) as the advantage of using eco-friendly agricultural products, followed by high-quality food provided, enhanced nutrition, and improved taste, while ‘higher school meal cost’ received the highest response from 102 parents (36.2%) as the disadvantage of using eco-friendly agricultural products, followed by ‘reliability of eco-friendliness’(85 parents, 30.1%), ‘unstable supply and demand’ (77 parents, 27.3%), and ‘boring menu’ (18 parents, 6.4%). It was also found that the majority of parents are aware of schools receiving support fund for eco-friendly agricultural products from the city or the education office, as 186 parents responded that they are ‘aware’ of it (66.0%) and 96 parents responded that they are ‘not aware’ of it (34.0%). As for the parents’ perception of cost burden falling on parents when subsidy is not provided, 210 parents (74.5%) responded that ‘eco-friendly meals must be provided even if the burden of cost falls on the parents’ while 72 parents (25.5%) responded that they ‘will not insist on eco-friendly meals if the burden of cost falls on the parents,’ indicating that the majority of parents are in favor of eco-friendly school meals even if they are burdened with the cost. Lastly, with survey results for parents’ reponses to satisfaction factors of eco-friendly school meals (open for multiple selection) showing ‘assurance of safety’ as the top factor, followed by ‘trust for the excellent quality,’ ‘freshness in quality,’ ‘little loss of nutrition,’ and ‘improved preference,’ it was found that most parents are satisfied with eco-friendly meals because of their assured safety and excellent quality.
