Compressible solids exhibit pressure-dependent yielding/failure criteria. The pressure-volume (P-V) relationship is a prerequisite for the accurate simulation of the deformation behavior of a compressible solid. In order to determine pressure, the radial stress as well as the axial stress needs to be determined. While the axial stress is suitably measured using a load cell, it is not a simple task to measure the radial stress, which is a limitation of conventional test methodology. This study establishes a method to measure the P-V relationship of a compressible solid; more specifically, a method to measure the radial stress. According to the thick-walled cylinder (TWC) theory, the radial stress in a cylinder can be determined using the measured hoop strain at the outer wall. This theory considers situations where the radial stress in the inner wall (internal pressure) is applied throughout the whole height of the cylinder, causing the whole cylinder to expand radially. However, the specimens located in a TWC during practical compression tests provide radial stress to only the inner wall portion corresponding to the height of the specimen being compressed. As a result, the radially un-stressed portion of the cylinder prohibits radial expansion of the cylinder portion that is in contact with the specimen. Therefore, the direct application of TWC theory to a cylinder being radially stressed in only a limited region leads to erroneous determinations of the internal radial stress using the measured hoop strain. However, if the height of the specimen is not too much shorter than the height of the cylinder, i.e., within the limited stroke of the punch, there may be a possibility of measuring the radial stress of the specimen using TWC theory. Based on this reasoning, this study investigated first whether measuring the radial stress of the specimen using the TWC is feasible. Based on simple modeling of the TWC without the specimen, the result of the finite element (FE) analysis has shown that, provided the geometry of the TWC is appropriately designed, TWC theory can be applied up to a significant magnitude of the volume strain for the specimen positioned in the cylinder. Based on the above simulation result, this study further created design guidelines for the geometry (the wall thickness and the inner diameter) of TWCs from the viewpoints of (1) the maximum magnitude of the volume strain of the specimen up to which the TWC theory is applicable, (2) the maximum measurable radial stress before cylinder yielding occurs, and (3) the magnitude of the hoop strain when the magnitude of the internal pressure (radial stress) of the cylinder is very small, particularly at the initial stage of the compression testing. In order to establish the method to determine the radial stress of a specimen located in a TWC, further numerical analysis was carried out using a finite element model including the specimen and TWC. The result indicated that the average radial stress of the specimen was different from the radial stress measured at the outer wall using the TWC theory. Based on this finding, a correction function was defined: where epsilon_v is the volume strain and mu is the friction coefficient. To determine the function, an equation of force equilibrium was established: where F_T is the force at the upper punch, F_B is the force at the bottom punch, and A_c is the current contact area between the specimen and the inner wall of the TWC. The function can be determined via the non-linear curve fitting of the experimental data using the equation of force equilibrium. Once the function is determined, the average radial stress of the specimen can be determined via the equation. This method to measure average radial stress was verified via numerical analysis. Finally, using the average radial stress measured using the above-established method and the average axial stress measured using the load cell, the P-V curve of rigid polyurethane foam was experimentally determined. Using this experimentally determined P-V curve as the input property, the FE simulation of the TWC experiment was carried out. The P-V curve produced by the FE simulation was reasonably consistent with the input property (the experimentally determined P-V curve), indicating the reliability of the experimentally determined P-V curve.
