The protection of cultural heritage by international community including UNESCO is changing with putting more priority on the living heritage or intangible cultural heritage than the tangible cultural heritage such as architectural structures. Among them, more focus is put on the preservation, enjoyment and transmission to the next generations of the traditional culture. So, the exhibition hall on the topic of intangible cultural heritage plays a great role in providing people with the chance of getting access to the traditional culture. As the introduction and exhibition of intangible culture is mainly done by the behavior transmission and language transmission, the exhibition method for the intangible cultural heritage shall be realized in a method different from that for the tangible heritages. Since 2004 ICON Seoul World Museum Contest, the museums around the world have started to get more interested in the display of the intangible cultural heritages. So, this study is designed to find out the characteristics of the display at the exhibition hall for the intangible cultural heritage through the study and analysis of the cases of displays in the performing arts among the intangible cultural heritages.
For this purpose, the characteristics of intangible cultural heritage and performing arts have been studied through theories and then the performing arts field in the intangible cultural heritage was classified depending on the type and media of display, which are the method of realizing the display. The performing arts field among the intangible cultural heritage was found through the advance studies to have 4 display contents such as 'contents of transmission field explaining the value of cultural heritage', 'organization and type of festival', 'transmitter and successor' and 'record of festival'. The display contents have been studied on how they have been realized and how the intangible cultural heritage can be realized through the type and media of display. For the study in details, for the domestic intangible cultural heritages, the exhibition halls for the performing arts among the intangible cultural heritage designated by the regulatory authority have been selected (such as Mast Museum of Korea, Hanoi World Mast Museum, Gochang Pansori Museum, Imsil Pilbong Agricultural Music Museum, and Jindo Arirang Expereince Hall) while as the overseas exhibition all, the Peking Opera Museum of China and Kabuki Museum of Japan were selected as they are located in Asia and close to Korea. The study was conducted through the advance studies and the field studies. The study found out that most of the exhibition halls did not display the components of the transmission of performing arts (contents of transmission field, organization and type of festival, story on the transmitter and successor and record of the festival) in various types and media of the display. Some exhibition halls tried to induce the visitor to participate in the experience factors and make the display space as the stage for giving the visitors the sense of the field. But it was found that the display was focused on the exhibition of the artifact which is often used as the method of display at the existing museum rather than giving priority on the characteristics of the intangible cultural heritage.
The most characteristics of the performing arts, in the intangible cultural heritage are the 'transmission' and the 'sense of field'. To realize them with the exhibition, this study suggests the 'display of performing art', 'realization of display using the source community', and 'display of archive' as the method of display.
The realization of the intangible cultural heritage is not just to transfer the intangible cultural heritage but to preserve and transmit the intangible cultural heritage. It is expected that the results of this study are a good help in helping the exhibition hall to make the preservation of the future intangible cultural heritage.
