Recently, demand for polymer-fiber reinforced composites is gradually increasing in various industrial fields, and essential properties such as flame retardant, heat resistance, and defrost are studied according to use. As additives and surface treatment are applied to matrix or reinforcement of composite materials, the interface properties of matrix and reinforcement can vary, and mechanical and wetting properties of composite materials can be improved. In this study, wetting and interfacial properties was compared with fiber mat array, coating degree of nanoparticle, and viscosity of resins. And optimum condition of manufacturing of multi-functional composites and detecting of damage were studied with surface roughness, nanoparticle coating. First, optimum manufacturing condition was selected with array of glass fiber (GF) mats. The glass fiber (GF) mats were used unidirectional (UD), bidirectional (BD, 0/90 degree), and randomly-chopped (RC). Single fiber tensile test was performed to determine defect degree by fiber weave. Short beam shear test was performed to determine interfacial properties. Static contact angle variation and permeability measurement were performed to determine wetting properties with GF mat array. The interfacial and wetting properties were determined to arrays of GF mats using these all results. Second, optimum manufacturing condition was selected with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) solution with the different weight fraction via interfacial, wetting and flame retardant properties. GF mat was coated to ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) solution with the different weight fraction to dipping and drying method. Single fiber tensile test was performed to determine effect of mechanical properties of GFs with ADP coating solution. Flame retardant test was performed to select optimum ADP coating solution based on UL-94 V test. Microdroplet pull-out test was performed to determine interfacial properties of GF and unsaturated polyester (UP). Static contact angle variation was performed to compare wetting properties with ADP weight fraction of ADP coating solution. Optimum condition of ADP weight fraction of ADP coating solution was determined using these results. Third, two different GFs were used to compare interfacial and wetting properties with p-DCPD. Interfacial properties of two different GFs and p-DCPD were compared using interfacial shear stress (IFSS). IFSS was determined using fragmentation test of dual fiber composite (DFC) and cyclic loading test. Wetting properties were obtained from dynamic and variation of static contact angles. Surface energy and to determine work of adhesion of two different GFs and p-DCPD was calculated using dynamic contact angle. Sizing agent of two different GFs was extracted using acetone extraction method and compared using FT-IR spectra. Mechanical properties of two different GFs and p-DCPD composites were compared using tensile and Izod impact test at room and low temperature. The relationship between interfacial properties and mechanical properties was determined and optimum fiber sizing condition was obtained using these all results. Forth, frost retardant of composites was evaluated with surface roughness using sand paper. Surface of GFRCs was sanded using sanding machine with different grit of sand papers. Load of sanding surface of GFRCs using sanding machine was quantified using load cell. Static contact angle was performed to determine hydrophobicity with surface roughness of GFRCs. Observation of thickness of frost was performed to evaluate frost retardant with GFRCs surface roughness at low temperature. Roughness of GFRCs surface was quantified and observed using atomic force microscope (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Optimum condition of surface roughness was determined to frost retardant using these results. Fifth, CFRC plates were manufactured using two different resins, epoxy and unsaturated polyester (UP), by a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. The permeability, as indicated by the spreading difference via VARTM, was measured for two composites with the same fiber volume fraction but different viscosities. The interfacial properties of the CFRC, manufactured using these different resins, were evaluated utilizing the interlinear shear strength (ILSS) test and contact angle measurements. Three dimensional electrical resistance (3D ER) mapping was used to detect damage caused by the drilling of holes in the CFRC plates. Typically such drilling results in damage such as delamination, for which the location and extent of damage of was determined using 3D ER mapping. It was determined that the carbon fiber/UP composite experienced more damage during drilling than the carbon fiber/epoxy composite.
