ABSTRACT Given that dream symbols are often regarded as the channels of unconscious, this study is purposed to analyze and understand how dream symbols function in some healing works by virtue of symbolization, beyond unconscious processes within humans. This approach puts its foundation on in - depth psychological understanding over the specific complexity of symbolic patterns of dream messages, let alone dream symbols - in a sense, as an attempt toward the individuation process introduced by C. G. Jung. It was also aimed, furthermore, to introduce dream symbols from the vantage point of Christian counseling in service to spiritual healing. To put it concretely, comprised of 5 chapters as a whole, this study dedicated its first chapter to describing basic natures around this study - including research motives and purposes, research methods and preceding reviews, as well as its orderly evolvement and limitations. In chapter 2, committed to provide theoretical background for better understanding of dream symbols, first of all, dreams were introduced as physiological phenomena and processes in the realm of cognitive·neuroscience, in addition to wide - ranging review of the theory of S. Freud who claimed that the function and role of dreams are to fulfill unconscious wishes suppressed. Secondly, C. G. Jung, who is deemed to have written a new chapter of Analytical Psychology, and his own concept of dream symbols were thoroughly presented. Given the fact that Jung gave an explanation of concepts around ‘personal unconscious’, ‘collective unconscious’ and ‘archetype’, respectively, this study, among those concepts, in particular, put its focus on the behaviour patterns and functions of ‘persona’ ‘shadow’ ‘anima’ and ‘animus’ which are being formed during the process that ‘ego’, one of the collective unconscious archetypes, builds relationship with external world and adjusts itself accordingly. Moreover, understanding of how the archetypal image as Jung’s core concept works by virtue of symbols was applied to a framework for interpreting client’s dreams in the clinical setting. Thirdly, the theory of Wilfred R. Bion, who viewed ‘the pursuit of truth’ as the purpose of analytical psychology, was brought to discussion. Bion argued that ‘Grid C’, in addition to its application to dreams, has also something to do with the fulfillment of prophecy and vision, which he called ‘Dream - thoughts.’ According to Bion, it was viewed that dream - thoughts come to life while a client talks about his/her dreams in counseling. Barbara S. Sullivan made the point that ‘Bion’s concept of O’ is similar to Jung’s idea of collective unconscious. In this study, research method stays in line with Sullivan’s view that links the theories of Jung and Bion and conceptualizes them. More specifically, Bion’s notion - that one takes back as one’s own the emotion that the one wasn’t able to deal with in ignorance - in fact, is a key of containment. This idea is similar to Jung’s way to give rise to the wholeness of life by embracing split opposites; with symbols as ingredients used for creation and containment as a highly creative work, a great deal of possibility has become accessible not only for clients, but also for counselors. Chapter 3 was used to examine dream symbols within fairy tales by applying general concepts and Jung·Bion’s concepts. In an effort to help better understand meanings and healing works of dream symbols, in the first place, careful review was carried out over dream symbols appearing within fairy tales. Secondly, dream was approached from the perspective of healing in a way of making analysis of characters, symbolic meanings, and transformations within Dream Studio authored by Kang So-chon. Just like in dream interpretation, the interpretation of the fairy tale was centered on real-world experiences and subjective interpretations, which is because universal, archetypal images showcasing group psyche are often projected to fairy tales and folktales. In so doing, it was attempted to link a client’s dream symbols to healing works in the clinical setting by virtue of dream stories, characters, and symbols within fairy tales. In chapter 4, dream symbols that clients actually revealed in the midst of clinical practices were reinterpreted on the basis of understanding in Christian counseling. To this end, the research made an effort to connect healing resources all together by stimulating associations with clients’ dreams while preserving Jung’s analytical frameworks. With a classification - a starting point of individuation process at its first stage and self - realization through individuation process at its second stage - an analysis of clients’ dreams was conducted. Here the perspective of Christian counseling was integrated because one can take his/her life to a new higher level beyond his/her own limitations through the process of duly interpreting the meanings of dream symbols. The dream process toward the completion of true ‘self’, conceptualized by C. G. Jung, is very similar to the progress toward spiritual maturity in Christianity - bearing each one’s cross to move forward in imitation of Christ. The research paid attention to the dream process in interpreting dreams. ‘Complexio oppositorm’, which was introduced by C. G. Jung, along with ambiguity around opposites serve as the life-giving power of God through the ‘incarnation of O’, which is creation defined by Bion. Jung’s study, however, paid rarely attention to Jesus’ love of humans and historicity underlying the cross, a key symbol of Christianity. By contrast, this study brought light to the implication that the symbol of Jesus Christ’s Cross is the communion of God and humans and the integration of suffering and salvation, and that dream symbols serve as a channel toward hope and future that humans aspire. Lastly, chapter 5 was expended in elaborating conclusions and recommendations, along with some implications in Christian counseling. This study aimed to make a comparative analysis between a Christian counseling perspective and in-depth psychological theories over the meaning of dream symbols as the channels of unconscious, and to propose a better holistic view. However, it can be regarded as limitations that this study was not able to delve deeper into other aspects - such as various cultures relating to dream symbols, as well as gender and age. Despite some limitations as such, on the other hand, it would be worthwhile that this study attempted to make case analysis of dream symbols, and that analysis of dream symbols was brought to light as able to have a creative effect on clients in Christian counseling by virtue of self-realization and healing.
