This study aimed to explore the overlooked meaning of the Oedipus Complex as a process of mental maturation. In order to do this, the researcher reviewed the concepts of instinct, which links the psyche and soma, libido and the formation of the ego, and psychosexual development. The phallic stage for the boy is the first experience of the outside world and is significant in that it has a major influence on psychic activity and life as a whole. In order to emphasize its importance, Freud quoted Sophocles’ ‘Oedipus Rex’ and called it the Oedipus Complex because the content was similar to what he found in the development of the psychoanalytic process. The Oedipus Complex is often understood as incestuous and parricidal desire but due to fear the son desperately attempts to avoid this in order to protect his parents. The true meaning of Freud’s Oedipus Complex includes the complex vicissitudes of libido and love object and furthermore, a metaphor for the fight for self realization. The Oedipus stage is when the sexual instinct separates from the ego instinct and takes on its original function. The child chooses an external libidinal object and naturally that first object is the mother, the safest choice. However, due to threats of castration, the cathexis is frustrated and the Oedipus Complex initiates, and most children overcome it by identifying with the parent and forming a superego. This study concluded that the Oedipus Complex as part of maturation, is when the narcissistic libido expands to the field of object love. First, in the process of overcoming the Oedipus Complex, the authority of the parent is taken in the ego via identification and a new psychic structure, the superego, is formed. Second, the conflict and frustration that is experienced during the Oedipus Complex acts as unconscious psychological trauma causing neuroses, and grossly effects life after. Third, according to the identification with the parent the psychological sex of the child is fortified and sexual identity is formed. Fourth, the process of the Oedipus Complex is when the child ventures into the outside world and forms a relationship as part of ego development. The researcher attempted to explore the true meaning of the Oedipus Complex as a process of human development. The study aimed to help better understand individuals suffering from lack of morality, neuroses, sexual identity diffusion, and expecially those dealing with difficulties in object relations.
