제 3 외국어 학습자의 제 2 외국어 학습 습득에 미치는 영향 Effects of the Third Language on the Second : The Role of L3 in the Interpretation of Articles with Definite Plurals in L2A원문보기

Recent developments in the acquisition of third languages (L3A) have only placed an emphasis on the influence of L1 or L2 on L3A (forward transfer). However, this study investigated the role of L3 in second language acquisition (L2A) (backward transfer), by focusing on crosslinguistic variations in interpretation of English plural NPs. In English, bare plurals are considered as a generic reference while definite plurals and demonstrative plurals are interpreted as being specific. In contrast, all nouns in French need an article, and hence bare plurals are not allowed. Instead, definite plurals, but not demonstrative plurals, can have a generic reference. Chinese and Korean languages, on the other hand, do not have an article system, and bare plurals can be freely interpreted as generic or specific depending on the context.
Given this background, this study conducted three experiments in order to explore the interpretation of different types of plural NPs in English: 1) Experiment 1 with four groups of participants, Native English Speaker (n=13, NE), L1-Korean L2-English learners (n=26, KE), L1-Korean L2-English L3-French learners (n=20, KEF), and L1-French L2-English learners (n=20, FE) 2) Experiment 2 with four groups of participants, NEs (n=13), KEs (n=26), L1-Korean L2-English L3-Chinese learners (n=20, KEC), and L1-Chinese L2-English learners (n=20, CE). 3) Experiment 3 with four groups of participants, NEs (n=13), KEs (n=26), L1-Chinese L2-English L3-Korean learners (n=20, CEK), and CEs (n=20). The results of these experiments show that L3 transfer occurs for all L3 learner groups, (KEFs, KECs, and CEKs). The thesis also discusses the validity of four possible backward transfer theories of (L2A) for third language (L3) learners: Absolute L1 Transfer, the Foreign Language Effect, Cumulative-Enhancement Model and Typological Primacy Model.
Overall, in regards to backward transfer, L3 plays a more significant role than L1 in L2A for L3 learners. These findings are significant in the field of third language acquisition research as they help to emphasize the importance of L3 influences on L2A. Therefore, in terms of backward transfer, the results are more supportive of Foreign Language Effect. Therefore, for those multilinguals, it is important to factor the L3 influence when acquiring L2 because L3 transfer is more important than any other source of transfer.
