This paper examines the Korean society’s perception on the Vietnam War and deploying of troops, from the perspective of soldiers and technicians who were deployed to Vietnam. Prior to deployment, Korean society perceived the Vietnam War as a struggle for independence of the Vietnamese people irrelevant to ideology. However, the threat of Communism, which way the onset for the ‘Korean War’, provided a new perceiving frame for the Vietnam War. The Korean society approached the Vietnam War with the theory of Anti-Communism, which led to the misinterpretation of the true essence of the war and became a battle of ideologies. President Park considered Vietnam War as an ideological war, and an escape way to resolve the problems which the Korean society faced during that period. He analyzed that the deploying of troops to Vietnam could prevent the reduction of the Korean troops·US Forces in Korea and develop economic growth. These are the core factors which led to the deployment of troops to the Vietnam War. Deployment to Vietnam did not create a big resistance in the Korean society. The main focus of the Korean society were towards the ‘treaty between Korea and Japan’. Discussion of deployment of troops were limited at the National Assembly. The opposition party continued to hold their uncertain attitude towards the issue, and the political leverage of the ruling party was greater than the opposition party. Consequently, four deployments were proceeded as President Park had initially intended. In the early stages of deployment, Korean society perceived the front of the Vietnam War as a great danger which can be a matter of life and death. Soldiers and technicians deployed to Vietnam were exposed to the dangers of the battlefield and the death toll increased. In the case of combatant, the fear of entering to battlefield and compulsory mobilization to Vietnam made fugitive soldiers. As time passed, these perceptions changed. The experience in the Vietnam inspired achievement and patriotism for the soldiers. Moreover, the economic benefits from deployment attracted men with various backgrounds. If survived, deploying to Vietnam became an economic way out for people. In fact, soldiers and technicians who came back from Vietnam earned a great amount of foreign currency and this changed the standard of living of the public. By this time, Korean society’s perception on the deployment was more about the economic factors, referring the Vietnam War as the ‘Vietnam-boom’. Economic compensation was a key factor in decreasing the fear of the Vietnam War. Also, within the social control of government, the Vietnam War became daily life for people, directly or indirectly participating in the war. These perceptions were different from those which the government intended it to be, such as ‘protection for liberalism’ and the ‘gratitude for U.S.A’.
