The Effect of Background Music on Interior Occupants’ Responses to the Atmospheres in Cafe Environments : A Psychophysiological Approach using Electroencephalogram(EEG) and a Likert Scale원문보기

Design for commercial space has primarily comprised visual elements. Consumers nowadays respond to multiple sensory elements. It is necessary for commercial interior design to not only incorporate visual aspects but also auditory, olfactory, and tactile design elements to stimulate consumers’ sensory preferences. This research, thus, explored consumer responses regarding multiple senses, visual and auditory, in a café environment among commercial spaces. In particular, it investigated the effects of the genres of background music on consumers while they assess the café environment’s atmosphere. The hypotheses were “There will be differences in the changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) indices and space atmosphere indices depending on the background music genre at the café” and “There will be differences in the changes in EEG indices and atmosphere indices based on the background music for each space of the café.” To enhance the objectiveness of the verification of these hypotheses, the research was conducted as an empirical study utilizing the values of a psychophysiological measure as well as those of a self-report measure. Research methods were as follows. First, it was confirmed through a literature review that background music is an important element for forming space atmosphere in terms of space design. Second, EEG, a psychophysiological experimental method, was measured for 40 participants with 11 channels based on the international 10–20 system electrode placement. Following the EEG experiment, a post-experiment survey, according to a Likert scale, was administered to measure the space atmosphere quotient. The variables used for the EEG experiment were three images of the café space and two genres of background music. Third, EEG data analysis extracted the relative power spectrum, while its level of EEG activation was statistically verified by a paired t-test and a one-way ANOVA. The reliability of the post-experiment survey data was tested with Cronbach’s alpha; the differences among elements were verified by the one-way ANOVA. The results confirmed that there are differences among participants’ EEG responses and assessments of space atmosphere according to the background music genre. This implies that space design should consider visual and auditory elements altogether. In addition, there were differences in space atmosphere assessment based on the background music genre of each café environment. This signifies that certain kinds of background music are more suitable for certain café spaces and that spatial atmosphere can be set in a positive direction when the harmony between visual and auditory senses is achieved. Lastly, when jazz is the background music of a café space, it may be a more compatible genre than others for creative activities and may also induce emotions. Dance music, moreover, may be suitable for arousing a pleasant ambiance or for simple problem-solving. In sum, background music can be utilized as a factor which brings about emotions within space. These outcomes have verified the influence of background music in café environment on human emotions through qualitative and quantitative data. Furthermore, this research is significant in that it has utilized an empirical verification method to explore humans’ preferred senses in terms of space design.
