The purpose of this study is how to select the ornamental plants for optimal planting in the daylight environment. Experiments were performed at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in Iseo-myeon, Wanju-gun, Jeonbuk during six months from April to September 2017. The 3grades shading conditions made 0%, 50%, 80% shading using a black light shielding net. The results of this study are as follows.
1. Pseudolysimachion linariifolium grew the best and had the highest ornamental value in 50% shading condition. P. linariifolium was a low growing during the summer and ornamental values decreased with non-shading conditions. The length was the longest in 80% shading condition, but the plants were actually overgrown and lodged in August.
Therefore, the best place to planting Pseudolysimachion linariifolium for landscaping is in half-shadow.
2. Physostegia virginiana grew the best and had high ornamental value both at non-shading and 80% shading condition. Plant length and internode length were the longest in 80% shading condition, but had overgrowth resulting in lowest ornamental value. Therefore, Physostegia virginiana as ground-cover could be planted from sunny area to semi-shaded area.
3. Elsholtzia splendens grew well at non-shading conditions in early stages of the experiment, but growth halted in strong light. In 50% shading condition, the plant improved in growth starting June and grew well. The plant length grew the longest in 80% shading condition, Ornamental value was the lowest caused by the plant length was overgrown. Therefore, Elsholtzia splendens should be planted with varying shading levels depending on its growth characteristics.
4. Mukdenia rosii grew well and had best ornamental value in 50% shading condition. Shading conditions non-significantly influenced plant height, but showed significant influence in the number of leaves in order of non-shading condition, 50% shading condition and 80% shading condition. However, In non-shading condition, continuous experiments had shown that leaf burn and wilt appeared during summer resulting in lowest ornamental value. 5. Hosta ‘Golden Tiara’ grew the best in 80% shading condition, with exception of July where ornamental value was relatively lower. In summer, plant length and leaf area were the lowest and showed leaf burn in non-shading condition, due to increased the intensity of solar radiation.
Therefore, Hosta ‘Golden Tiara’ is considered to planting best in grounds at 50 and above shading conditions.
6. Heuchera Villosa ‘Palace Purple’, which has red leaves especially, had best growth and ornamental value in 80% shading and 50% shading conditions.
