The magnitude and frequency of earthquakes in Korea are increasing. As a result, anxiety about earthquakes increases, and interest in seismic design is growing. Among seismic design methods, seismic isolation is used as a base isolation in low-rise buildings. However, in the case of high-rise buildings, a mid-story isolation system is proposed due to technical problems. In this study, seismic response of a high-rise building considering the installation story of a mid-story isolation system was evaluated and a isolation device of a mid-story isolation system was designed. To do this, the 20-story building and 30-story building were used as example structures. Kobe(1995), Northridge(1994) and Loma Prieta(1989) earthquakes were applied as earthquake excitations. The seismic responses of the example buildings were investigated by changing the location of the isolation layer from the bottom of the 1st floor to the bottom of the top floor. Analysis results, when the seismic isolation system is applied, story drift ratio and acceleration response are reduced compared to the case without the isolation system. It is most effective when the isolation layer is located on the lower part of the buildings. However, in that case, the structure may become unstable. Therefore, it is necessary to consider both structural efficiency and safety when a mid-story isolation system for a high-rise building is designed. It is good to install isolation layer on the higher part of high-rise building. The location of the isolation layer was determined and an isolation layer was installed below of the 15th floor of the 20-story building. Kobe(1995) and Nihonkai-Chubu(1983) earthquakes were applied as earthquake excitations. Seismic responses were investigated by varying the yield strength and horizontal stiffness of the isolation device. Based on the analytical results, the seismic system reduces the response by concentrating the displacement on the isolation layer. If the displacement is too large, the structure becomes unstable. However, decreasing the displacement of the isolation layer increases the story drift ratio. Therefore, an engineer needs to adjust yield strength and horizontal stiffness appropriately.
