Korean classic music circles have made a variety of attempts to come up to the public according to the stream of present-day performing arts. The objective of this study was to examine one of the attempts, namely opera singer's use of performance techniques and music narrations in musicals, and then look into its application methods. Music performance has more constraints than verbal performance does. There are many requirements for a composer of performance music to bear in mind, such as the stream of music, given lyrics, theme symbols and so on. Therefore, he or she must interpret these requirements appropriately according to scripts and contexts and then apply it to performances. In the second chapter, the developmental backgrounds, vocalization characteristics, music characteristics and performance features of opera and musical were examined and then the difference between opera and musical that making the difference of expressive methods was looked into. A main focus is to accept their fundamental difference and then acknowledge the application of performance techniques must not harm opera's unique characteristics. In the third chapter, opera's needs of performance techniques and methods of its acceptance were looked into. Different from ordinary performers, opera singers must maintain and express bel canto vocalization. In this vein, they must use body parts appropriately in order to concentrate on the optimization of vocalization in performance. But they cannot easily accept this principle. Via interviews with opera directors, opera singer's worries and director's solutions were examined, and then opera singer's use methods of body parts were looked into in order for them to admit their current status and then apply new techniques to performance. Human emotions have effects on physical movements and changes. On the other hand, physical movements and muscle memories can evoke emotions as well. This study used this fact as a method of opera singer's application of musical performance techniques, namely music narrations. Since physical use must be applied precisely according to music streams, scenes and character's dispositions, singers must understand composer's intention of theme symbols correctly through analyzing music scores. In addition, they have to understand the main melody of music as well as the situation, atmosphere and expressive intention of orchestral instruments. Although there are some differences in the application of musical performance techniques according to the differences of characters and contents, this study presented expressive intentions within the scope of ordinary interpretation. In addition, in order to make singers understand expressive intentions as an art of narrations, this study examined the use method of pseudo language, a means of non-verbal communication. In the fourth chapter, Robert Plutchik's classification of human basic emotions was looked into, together with the change of physical response, the change of breathing, and behavioral modality, in relation to human basic emotions. And then the method of application of Scott McCloud's classification of six emotions and its facial expression changes to music was presented. These techniques were to train physical use diversely and express emotions appropriately, thus providing help to concentration on the manifestation of emotions and construction of characters. The application of performance techniques to opera was analyzed focusing on "mad scene" of Lucia di Lammermoor, performed by soprano Natalie Dessay. It is necessary to remind people of opera being a performance which delivers beautiful music as well as drama. In this regard, it is necessary to approach opera as a character. Since the public and opera circles already require performance ability from opera singers, opera singers must accept music performance positively and cultivate related skills.
