This study aims to formulate an interactive art education program, apply it to five-year-old children, and validate its effects. To this end, research was conducted to develop such a program, after which its effects were validated upon its application. The research questions in this study are as follows:
1. How should the interactive art education program for early childhood pedagogy be developed? 1-1. Which purpose and objectives will the interactive art education program set for young children? 1-2. How will the content of the interactive art education program for young children be organized? 1-3. How will the teaching-learning methods of the interactive art education program for young children be formulated? 1-4. How will assessment be conducted under the interactive art education program for young children?
2. What are the effects of the interactive art education program for early childhood pedagogy? 2-1. What are the effects of the interactive art education program for young children on their artistic disposition? 2-2. What are the effects of the interactive art education program for young children on their creativity? 2-3. What are the effects of the interactive art education program for young children on their playfulness? 2-4. What are the effects of the interactive art education program for young children on their pro-social behavior?
Each research question was explored using the following steps: To address Question 1, an interactive art education program for early childhood pedagogy was developed. To this end, previous studies and related literature were reviewed, accompanied by field observation and in-depth interviews with teachers. The draft version of the program was formulated based on this work; its appropriateness and validity were then examined by expert consultations and pilot studies. The final program that was developed through this process consisted of the purpose and objectives, content of instructions, teaching-learning methods, and assessment. Their details are below.
The purpose of the interactive art education program is to arouse children’s interest and curiosity in interactive art as well as their ability to express themselves in a creative manner. The more concrete objectives that serve for this purpose are: “enjoy interacting and playing with interactive art works actively”; “understand the aesthetic elements of the works of interactive art”; "creates interactive art works by creatively utilizing materials and spaces"; “nurture the ability and develop an attitude for communicating with others through producing collaborative art works”; and “have an open mind toward genres and forms of art.” The content of instructions under the present program includes: exploring the aesthetic elements of a given piece of artwork, understanding the interactivity of the artwork; exploring the aesthetic elements of its materials and expressing with art, decorating exhibition space; exploring the aesthetic elements of produced works and interacting with them. The teaching-learning methods under this program are divided into teaching-learning principles, teaching-learning processes, teaching strategies, teachers’ roles, and teaching materials. The teaching-learning principles include: the principle of interaction; the principle of cooperation; the principle of orientation toward play; the principle of orientation toward processes; and the principle of integration. The teaching-learning processes entail: understanding artwork; making a piece of artwork; interacting with the product; and assessing and sharing the art. The teaching strategies involve: using aesthetic terms; utilizing digital technology and various media; asking open-ended questions; introducing artistic techniques; encouraging various expressions; encouraging cooperative learning; promoting interaction with peers; and promoting play. Teachers’ roles include creating an environment, promoting interaction, and guiding children through play. Teaching materials include artistic materials for drawing and crafting, everyday items, food, and digital products. This study divides the assessment of the present program into the assessment of children, teachers, and the program itself.
For Question 2, research was conducted on 40 five-year-old children (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the comparison group) at two kindergartens in Seoul and Namyangju, Korea, from March to July 2017 with the aim of identifying the effects of the interactive art education program upon its implementation. A pre-test was conducted on the children’s artistic disposition, creativity, and pro-social behavior before implementing the 12-week program. This was followed by a post-test, using the same evaluative tool as in the pre-test. Based on the findings thus collected, an independent samples t-test and a covariate analysis were performed to examine the differences between the groups. Following is the summary of the findings on the effects of the present program upon implementation obtained through the above-mentioned process: First, the analysis of the effect of the interactive art education program on children’s artistic disposition revealed higher post-test scores in the experimental group than in the comparison group with statistical significance, spanning from the total score for artistic disposition to all of the sub-elements of artistic disposition (i.e., artistic attitude, artistic expression, artistic technique, and understanding and appreciation of art). This means that the present program is effective for developing children’s artistic disposition. Second, the analysis of the effect of the interactive art education program on children’s creativity showed a higher post-test total score for creativity in the experimental group than in the comparison group with statistical significance. In terms of the sub-elements of creativity, children in the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement in fluency, flexibility, and originality compared to those in the comparison group, but no significant difference was observed in imagination. Third, the analysis of the effect of the interactive art education program on children's playfulness indicated a higher post-test total score for playfulness in the experimental group than in the comparison group with statistical significance. In terms of the sub-elements of playfulness, children in the experimental group showed a significant improvement in physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, and expression of joy compared to those in the comparison group. No significant difference was found in their sense of humor. Fourth, the analysis of the effect of the interactive art education program on the pro-social behavior of children revealed a higher post-test total score for pro-social behavior in the experimental group than in the comparison group with statistical significance. In terms of the sub-elements of pro-social behavior, children in the experimental group displayed a significant improvement compared to those in the comparison group in leadership, giving help, communicating, actively caring for others, and sharing. No significant difference was witnessed in empathizing or controlling emotions. The above-mentioned findings establish the positive effects of the interactive art education program on five-year-old children’s artistic disposition, creativity, playfulness, and pro-social behavior. This indicates that the present program is suitable for implementation in actual early childhood education settings while also recognizing the value of the program for its distinctness from previous art education programs.
