Decades ago, the high-rise buildings have been constructed dramatically as an alternative to dense population and representing a city and country as a landmark. However, smoke and toxic gases generated on fire in the high-rise building are rapidly spreading throughout the stairwell and elevator shaft due to stack effect in buildings. Thus, these toxic gases and smoke cause many casualties during the evacuation. In fact, the casualties due to suffocation and smoke are likely than deaths due to actual fire. Therefore, to prevent the spread of smoke and toxic gases, the smoke control system is regulated at a pressure difference of 40 to 60 Pa between vestibule and living room by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and National Fire Safety Code (NFSC). To maintain the performance of smoke control system, the flow is constantly introducing through the fan. Among the smoke control system, the whole pressurization system is commonly used in Korea. As the whole pressurization system, there are vestibule pressurization, stairwell pressurization and vestibule and stairwell simultaneous pressurization system. Among those pressurization system, the vestibule pressurization system is most commonly used in Korea. However, the pressure difference on the highest floor and the lowest floor is different due to the leakage area and pressure drop generated in the smoke damper as well as the stack effect. To overcome these problems, the sandwich pressurization system is normally applied to Unites States and the United Kingdom. The sandwich pressurization system is a method in which fresh airs are supplied at the upper and lower floor and smoke and toxic gases are exhausted. Also, the elevators for evacuation is considered essentially for rapid and safety evacuation. However, elevator movement generated a strong pressure field inside the elevator shaft and it can affect the performance of smoke control system. Therefore, in this study, the effect of elevator movement and fire on pressure difference between vestibule and living room on the smoke control system in the high-rise building is experimentally and numerically analyzed. Firstly, the flow rate to maintain the standard pressure difference 40 to 60 Pa confirms by experimental apparatus. And then flow rate 0.144m3 was applied as a boundary condition for numerical analysis. Due to the limitations of the experimental apparatus, the real elevator speed could not be implement. Thus, the effect of low speed elevator movement was analyzed in advance. Secondly, to analyze the effect of fire, 31kW of fire was generated in the living room corresponding to 1MW with steady amount of flow. As a result of the fire experimental study, the pressure in the living room was increased by about 25 Pa depending on existing fire. This indicates that the temperature inside the living room has risen due to the pressure expansion phenomenon accompanied by an increase in temperature generated by fire. In addition, there is not pressure changed inside the elevator shaft and vestibule except for the living room where fire occurred. As a results of numerical analysis of elevator movement, the higher the speed of elevator movement, the greater the effect on the vestibule. In the case of moving on 10 m/s, it flows into the elevator shaft from the vestibule. However, when elevator speed is over 20m/s, a phenomenon in which the flow rate in the shaft is indicated into the vestibule by elevator movement is confirmed. Furthermore, as the elevator speed is increased, the flow rate of the elevator shaft flows into the vestibule and the pressure in vestibule was increased. Therefore, it was confirmed that the flow rate from the damper to the vestibule for maintaining the pressure difference of 40 to 60 Pa flows back into the damper from the vestibule. This is because the higher the elevator speed is, the more flow in the elevator shaft flows into the vestibule. This phenomenon occurs because the pressure in the vestibule is higher than the damper. The equations were derived by curve-fitting the pressure difference between the vestibule and fire room under the condition that the elevator speed was moving from 10 m/s to 100m/s corresponding from 1.5 m/s to 16 m/s. In order to maintain the pressure difference of 40 to 60 Pa between vestibule and living room, for safety evacuation for evacuees, the flow rate is constantly flowed in NFPA and NFSC. However, through experimental and numerical study, it is necessary to consider the change of flow rate considering the elevator movement and fire in order to secure the safety evacuation route.
