The purpose of this study is to use the formativity of pleats and reinterpret geometric module structures and examine the expressivity of module structures through the forms visualized as fiber works. As study methods, this author reviewed literatures including Korean and foreign technical publications, degree theses, journals, and websites and also carried out case study. The contents of this study are as follows. First, this author studied the concept of a module and geometric modules, analyzed the characteristics of modules attributed to pleats, and classified them into regularity, continuity, rhythmicity, and solidity. Regularity refers to some consistent order appearing through repetitive arrangement made by rules. Continuity is the pursuit of a structure connected through mutual correlation resulted from folding and unfolding. Rhythmicity appears with the order of movement implying an orderly and regular flow as well as temporal change. Lastly, solidity is from depth and a tridimensional structure attributed to the shapes of lines and methods of arrangement. Second, this author reinterpreted geometric module structures based on the contents above and classified them into the ‘minimal structure’, ‘organic structure’, and ‘layer structure’ to figure out their characteristics. The ‘minimal structure’ maintains consistent order through the repetition of uniform modules and appears as a simple composition. The ‘organic structure’ leads to holistic integration through interaction among units resulted from successive arrangement and combination. The ‘layer structure’ provides solidity to a two-dimensional plane through the overlapping of unit forms. For case study on artists, this researcher found module structures employing pleats technique from works created by contemporary artists like Issey Miyake, Matt Shlian, Kusama Tetsuo, or Kate Barber and figured out their characteristics. Based on the work created by that, this researcher has drawn conclusions as follows. First, the ‘minimal structure’ reveals the formativity of pleats itself just as it is, forms the least structure through the repetition of uniform modules in pleats and order of succession, and provides unity. Second, the ‘organic structure’ embraces the entire structure by arranging pleats in succession, creates a flexible flow with the directivity changing by arrangement, and implies diversity. Third, the ‘layer structure’ produces structural patterns with the overlapping of unit forms in pleats, forms a relievo-type solid structure on the plane, and extends the surface area. This study has contributed to extending the formativity of geometric modules that textile material can express with pleats. Therefore, it is expected that it will provide a new perspective to the field of textile on geometric modules.
