Korean commercial aviation industry has continued to grow to count over 100 million passengers per year. Although recent tension in the region involving THAAD has had a negative impact on air travel in 2015, the rapid growth of low cost carriers over the last five years has contributed to the 9% annual growth of aviation industry. The importance of baggage handling system has also risen as a result.
At airports, flight safety facilities have back-up resources so that any failure can be immediately addressed without causing disruption to the safe operation of flights. On the other hand, baggage handling system has no such back up which means that any trouble in the system leads to disruption in the punctual operation of flights. With aircraft maintenance, key components are replaced based on total usage hours or the number of usage in order to minimize breakage.
This study uses case analysis to examine issues with the maintenance of baggage handling system and determine the working life of key components for airports of different sizes so as to manage facilities effectively and minimize disruption. Airports are categorized by baggage handling capacity. 3 large airports, 2 medium-sized airports and 2 small airports have been selected for survey; a questionnaire was used to ask maintenance professionals at those airports in order to select key components.
The working life of key components of baggage handling system depends on usage characteristics. Based on the maintenance records and the actual operation status of baggage handling system, changes in the state of facilities were examines to provide a technical assessment which informed appropriate working life designation. When a certain period has elapsed after completion, the facility deteriorates; wear-and-tear of components varies according to operational conditions and hours. These factors are taken into account in proposing the following preventive maintenance measures.
First, maintenance records and the actual operation records of baggage handling system have been analyzed to propose appropriate working life for key components. Surveyed airports revealed that there was a disparity between the actual working life of components and that designated by manufacturers. More importantly, the working life of key components is not influenced by the amount of luggage processed; instead, it is influenced by operation hour and operation frequency. Second, preventive maintenance is proposed. Mechanical parts show a higher rate of breakage and failure than electric/electronic parts; 80% of total breakage occurred in a small number of mechanical items. In order to maintain the system in its optimal condition, a systematic and efficient maintenance is called for; annual budget should also be secured. A mid-to-long-term maintenance plan based on the proposed working life of key components will enable preventive maintenance.
Periodical replacement of key components in accordance with working life by airport size will secure system safety and uninterrupted operation. This will inform a mid-to-long-term maintenance plan and accurate stock level data so as to avoid excessive stock and to save budget.
