현재 FDM 방식은 ABS(Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) 수지와 PLA(Poly Lactic Acid) 수지를 주된 원료로 사용한다.

3D printing technology has attracted a lot of attention recently as partof the 4th industrial revolution. 3D printing technology involves many echnical methodologies, of which FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is the most common. FDM is one of the most popular 3D printing technologies because it is an inexpensive extrusion machine, it provides multi-material printing and it has a simpler structure. FDM sometimes uses thermoplastics such as ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) and PLA (Poly Lactic Acid). The purpose of this study was to investigate the engineering characteristics of this 3D printing technology compared with injection molding. Injection molding is a manufacturing method of using existing polymer products manufactured by 3D printing technology. In addition, ABS and PLA products manufactured by 3D printing technology to be used in future industry were evaluated according to their respective mechanical properties in order to predict their reliability. The automobile industry has been using plastic parts for fuel saving reasons recently, so ABS is widely used throughout the auto parts industry. Therefore, 3D printing technology is also used in the automotive industry. However, in order to use ABS parts manufactured by 3D printing technology in the automobile industry, these parts must prove their overcome reliability in an automotive setting. Therefore, this study evaluated the fatigue characteristics of ABS specimens manufactured by 3D printing technology, and thus determined the lifetime of ABS specimens according to the process parameters in this study. This analysis will provide the index data needed for the automotive industry to integrate ABS products made with 3D printing technology. Furthermore, as the use of fossil fuels has increased, so has the demand for the development of eco-friendly parts to replace existing materials and parts made from fossil fuel. This has been exacerbated with the increase of energy prices and the enforcement of regulations by environmental agencies. Currently, PLA can be extracted as a common and eco-friendly material. PLA is a biodegradable material that can replace traditional petrochemical polymers. PLA has great advantages since it is an eco-friendly material that causes the fewest number of cracks and the shrinkage phenomena when it is manufactured as a product leaves the least number of harmful byproducts. Throughout this process, improvement in the brittleness characteristics is another important task to be monitored throughout the production of industrial parts. Improvement in the brittle property of products lowers the tensile strength and tensile elasticity modulus of the parts. Therefore, this study produced the PLA as an environmentally friendly material by using a 3D printing technique and measured the mechanical properties of the process with a tensile test in order to evaluate the applicability of PLA in the industry. By combining the engineering characteristics of 3D printing technology with PLA tensile specimens, we have also grasped the merits of 3D printing technology that result from controlling the internal filling density and internal shape of PLA specimens. In addition, when PLA specimens were fabricated, the Engineering characteristics of 3D printing technology were used to control the internal filling density and internal shape of the specimen. As a result, this study showed the advantage of 3D printing technology.
