The study aimed to examine the sequential mediating effects of Korean adults' perceived social support and narcissism (healthy narcissism & defensive narcissism) in the relationship between their trauma experience and posttraumatic growth. For this study, printed questionnaires were distributed in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces of Korea and nationwide internet survey was also conducted. The participants included 185 adults over 18 year-old who satisfied the criterion for the trauma experience defined in this study. Data was analyzed using Hayes PROCESS macro(2013) for SPSS (Model 6) to test the sequential mediating effects and the relationships which exist among the variables of interest. Regression analysis and tests of indirect effects revealed that healthy narcissism mediated the relationship between trauma experience and posttraumatic growth but perceived social support did not. In addition, the sequential mediating effects were observed by perceived social support and narcissism (healthy narcissism & defensive narcissism) in the relationship between trauma experience and posttraumatic growth. In particular, as the less painful the trauma experience was and the more social support was perceived, the path to the posttraumatic growth was significant when the healthy narcissism increased or the defensive narcissism decreased. Particularly, in the case of sequential mediating effect through social support and healthy narcissism, the direct effect of trauma experience on posttraumatic growth was not significant, indicating a full mediating effect. This study has implications in that the perceived social support, a variable considered important in posttraumatic growth, was newly investigated in conjunction with the self-other relationship along with narcissism. The results suggest that perceived social support did not affect the posttraumatic growth process independently but it could affect the posttraumatic growth by the sequential mediating effect through narcissism (healthy narcissism & defensive narcissism). In addition to the existing literature on the pathological narcissism, this study highlights the utility of healthy narcissism in posttraumatic growth. Based on the results of this study, positive psychological variables such as the promotion of healthy narcissism or posttraumatic growth can be applied to counseling practice. In other words, in counseling scenes, counselors can provide social support to people who suffer from traumatic experience through empathy and mirroring, and help the client find social support of family, friends and others. These kinds of social supports provide a good selfobject experience, and it is expected that it will help the promotion of client's healthy narcissism, the relaxation of defensive narcissism, and further posttraumatic growth.
