J.S. Bach의 Suite for Violoncello Solo No.2 in d minor BWV.1008은 바흐가 쾨텐의 궁정악장이던 1717년에서 1723년 사이에 작곡된 것으로 추정되며, 이 시기의 다른 중요한 작품인 <브란덴부르크(Brandenburg) 협주곡>, <평균율 클라비어(Das Wohltemperierte Klavier)>와 함께 세속 기악음악 중의 하나이다.
Introduction and Polonaise Brillante for Violoncello and Piano in C Major Op.3은 그가 쓴 단 3개의 첼로 작품 중 하나로, 작곡 당시 Polonaise만 있었으나 이듬해인 1830년 짧은 Introduction이 추가되어 지금의 모습을 갖추게 되었다.
Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in d minor Op.40은 1934년 작곡된 쇼스타코비치의 초기와 중기의 과도기에 있는 작품이다.

This thesis for master's degree consists of the annotation of my graduate recital program; Johann Sebastian Bach Suite for Violoncello Solo No.2 in d minor BWV.1008, Frédéric Chopin Introduction and Polonaise Brillante for Violoncello and Piano in C Major Op.3 and Dmitrii Shostakovich Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in d minor Op. 40. It aims to further the performer's understanding and the knowledge of the above works. J.S. Bach's Suite for Violoncello Solo No.2 in d minor BWV.1008 was most likely written between 1717 and 1723, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen. Other secular instrumental works of this era include , . The suite casts in six movements and has the following structure and order of the movements; Prélude - Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - MenuetI & II - Gigue. Two Menuets are in Suites No.1 & No.2, whereas other Suites contain Bourrée in No.3 & No.4 or Gavotte in No.5 & No.6 instead of Menuet as optional dances. The violoncello as a melodic instrument in this piece shows up to four different voices by itself and the piece contains the well organized harmonic and contrapuntal texture.
Introduction and Polonaise Brillante for Violoncello and Piano in C Major Op.3 by Romantic composer F. Chopin is one of his three Violoncello pieces. He originally composed only Polonaise but he added the short Introduction in 1830. The piece shows the lively Slavic dance as well as piano's virtuosic technique.
The works by Dmitrii Shostakovich can be divided into three periods depend on the political situations. Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in d minor Op.40 in 1934 which was composed in the transition period between the early and the middle era. Shostakovich composed avantgarde style music in the beginning of his career but soon after Stalin's reign, Shostakovich had to follow the socialist's ideal. The other works in this era created two different aspects, one to follow Stalin's reign, the other to seek composer's own musical languages. This Sonata has four movements in Classic form. He used both Classic and slightly avantgarde styles in the use of rhythms, harmonies, and scales in this piece and they illustrate typical characteristics of his transition period.
