The study investigated the characteristics of AGS (Aerobic granular sludge) and removal of nutrient to treat municipal wastewater having low C/N ratio using SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) process. The volume of bio-reactor was 75 m3, the operation cycle was 6 cycle/d, the exchange rate was 50% and the influent flow rate was 225 m3/d. The time per 1 cycle was 60 min for inflow, 120 min for aeration and 60 min for settling & outflow. During the operation periods, the concentration of AGS and MLSS in the reactor increased with the increase of concentration of influent. Observations using optical microscope and E-SEM showed that the size of AGS increased with increasing influent concentration. When the settling time was reduced from 15 min to 10 min during the operation periods, the AGS concentration and size increased and the reactor maintained high MLSS concentration. Moreover, it was confirmed Ca2+ involved in formation of AGS by EDS analysis. And through microbial community analysis, it was confirm the abundance and diversity of microbial species involved in nitrification and denitrification in AGS. When SBR process using AGS was applied to treat municipal wastewater having low C/N ratio, the effluent satisfied the discharged water quality standard stably.
