The inrush current caused by the energization of an adjacent parallel converter transformer can make the unbalanced AC voltage drop, in a bipolar HVDC system which is operating in monopole mode. The DC voltage of the operating pole in the system can also drop low due to the AC voltage drop. When a transformer is de-energized, a certain degree of residual flux can remain in the converter transformer core. The residual flux can cause a severe saturation of the converter transformer core. In this case, the inrush current can appear for a long time and the DC under-voltage protection relay in the system may trip the operating pole. Then, the bipolar HVDC system cannot transmit any power. In this paper, a DC under-voltage protection method in a bipolar HVDC system is proposed in order to block the ignition of an unwanted trip when the converter transformer of the not operating pole is energized. The proposed method is a DC under-voltage protection using a DC harmonic current-restraining element to detect an inrush phenomenon. The second harmonic component and the fundamental frequency component on the DC side are caused by the unbalanced AC voltage and the unbalanced DC-offset component of the inrush current, respectively. Thus the DC under-voltage protection system using this characteristic can prevent the unwanted trip caused by the inrush phenomenon. There are some methods for the inrush current reduction, such as the pre-insertion resistor, the point-on-wave switching device, and the sequential phase energization. It is not easy to apply these methods on the pre-installed system, if there are space and structural restrictions. However the suggested method can be applied easily on the pre-installed system. The proposed method is verified in two bipolar HVDC systems, which are simulated by PSCAD. The first system is a bipolar HVDC system composed of CIGRE HVDC benchmark model, and the second system is the Jindo-Jeju HVDC system.
