Hydrogen energy is attracting attention as a clean and highly-efficient energy source in the future because of the high energy content of hydrogen and the only byproduct of water after using the energy. However, when hydrogen is used as an energy source, it requires a storage environment in ultra-high pressure and cryogenic liquid state. To solve the problem in the hydrogen storage, studies on the dehydrogenation reaction and related catalysts have been actively conducted to obtain hydrogen at a room temperature at a high temperature from organic liquid hydrides having a high hydrogen content. For catalyzed dehydrogenation reaction, noble metal catalysts such as platinum are mainly used. In particular, platinum-based catalysts have been widely used in various industrial fields such as petrochemical and electrochemical industry. However, due to the high cost of platinum as a raw material, it is difficult to secure economic efficiency in the use as an industrial catalyst. Therefore, in order to secure the economic efficiency of the platinum-based catalyst, studies have been made to reduce the amount of platinum used and increase the surface area of the platinum catalyst to improve its catalytic activity. Small particles as a result on applying nanotechnology in the synthesis have been used extensively in the catalyst field since they can have a relatively large specific surface area than the bulk counter part of the same mass. Particularly, the increase in catalytically active surface of the noble metal-based catalysts has been regarded as a very economical approach in that it can exhibit the same or higher catalytic activity as that in the bulk state even though a relatively small amount is used. However, in general, the production of nanocatalyst is limited by the use of a surfactant or a complicated process, which is somewhat inadequate for industrial applications. Therefore, in this study, a galvanic replacement reaction was used to produce economical catalysts, which are simple and economic process to prepare nanocatalysts of small size and specific surface area. The galvanic replacement reaction is carried out in such a manner that the target metal ion having a relatively high reduction potential and the supporting metal having a relatively low reduction potential are reacted with each other when they meet in an aqueous solution so that the target metal ion having a high reduction potential is metalized and a supporting metal having a low reduction potential refers to a reaction in which the target element is fixed in the form of supporting metal structures. This study is a study on the simple synthesis of catalysts which can maximize the surface area of catalysts while using less platinum for securing industrial economic efficiency of platinum catalysts and the properties of catalysts which affect the dehydrogenation reaction of decalin. Carbon-supported platinum nanocatalysts with a large surface area were fabricated by using a galvanic replacement method between copper metal nanoparticles and platinum ions. The efficiency of dehydrogenation reaction using decalin was also studied. For this purpose, at first the optimum copper mass fraction was studied by synthesizing various mass fraction of copper nanoparticles onto activated carbon before proceeding with galvanic replacement with platinum ion. Then, platinum nanocatalysts were prepared by controlling the amount of platinum precursor for substitution reaction with copper nanoparticles having a selected mass fraction. Especially, a study on the amount of supported catalyst and the economic efficiency was carried out using the elemental analysis which was nearly done in the conventional studies on supported catalysts. Finally, carbon-supported platinum nanocatalysts by a simple process of galvanic replacement reaction showed highly catalytic performance as well as economic feasibility in the dehydrogenation reaction of decalin by using small amount of platinum.
