Hydrotalcite, which is a kind of inorganic compound in various solid bases, has layered structure that called layered double hydroxide (LDH) containing anions and water molecules between positive metal hydroxides. They have a general chemical formula of [MII1-xMIIIx(OH)2][An-x/n·mH2O]. Hydrotalcite containing magnesium as a divalent cation (M2+) is generally used, and Cu, Co, Ni, Ca, Zn and Mn are also used. In the layered structure of brucite, when the magnesium ions are substituted with trivalent cations (M3+) having a similar size, the brucite-like layer becomes positive charge. As a result, anions such as CO22-, NO3-, Cl-, SO42-, and OH- appear as a compensating anion. The layer structure and characteristics of hydrotalcite are known to be well characterized at a molar ratio of Mg/Al 3, and the characteristic are different depending on the kind and ratio of the metal cation, the kind of anion. When hydrotalcite is calcined at a high temperature, the layered structure is destroyed and formed metal oxide having and acid-base pair is produced. Rehydration of the hydrotalcite obtained by thermal treatment recovers to its original structure and is called a memory effect. However, when calcined above a certain temperatrue, a spinel structure composed of MgAl2O4 is irreversibly produced. Because of such a memory effect, hydrotalcite can selectively exchange anions between the metal hydroxide layers, and thus it has been widely used as an anion exchanger, an adsorbent, and a sensor as well as a base catalyst. In this study, we tried to clarify the overall structural changes of hydrotalcite according to the thermal treatment temperature using the analytical methods. The catalytic activity and basic properties of the catalysts were investigated using the isomerization of glucose to fructose and the Hammett indicator method, one of the methods for analyzing the solid base properties. The relationship between the basic property and the catalytic activity was discussed. Various analysis methods such as XRD, FT-IR, TGA, FE-SEM and N2 adsorption-desorption were carried out and the change of the hydrotalcite was observed when the hydrotalcite was calcined. As the temperature increased, the water molecules inside the layer were released and monodentate, in which one oxygen atom of the carbonate ion was bonded to the metal atom, was produced. Above this temperature, the hydroxyl group bonded to the metal atom was released into the water molecule, and the metal oxide was formed, thereby releasing the monodentate in the form of carbon dioxide. At the same time, bidentate was formed for carbonate ions and we observed that the behavior of bidentate was similar to that of monodentate until the spinel structure was formed. We also investigated the structure and catalytic activity of Mg-Al hydrotalcite according to the ratio of metal cations. Mg-Al hydrotalcites (Mg-Al HT_X) were prepared by co-precipitation with varying the Mg/Al molar ratios (X=0.5-3.5), with the aim of investigating the effect of that ratios on catalytic properties. Isomerization of glucose to fructose was conducted using a batch-type reactor to confirm the activities of Mg-Al HT_Xs as base catalysts. Successful formation of Mg-Al HT_Xs was confirmed by various characterization tools such as ICP-AES, XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and TG analysis; however, excessive Al content resulted in failure to form Mg-Al HT structures owing to interruption in the growth of brucite-like (Mg(OH)2) layer structures by Al. Crystallite size and BET surface area of Mg-Al HT_Xs showed a tendency to increase with decreasing Mg/Al molar ratio (increasing Al content), leading to abundant surface base sites. The catalytic activity results clearly demonstrate that the Mg/Al molar ratio is a crucial factor in determining the catalytic activity of Mg-Al HT_X in the isomerization of glucose to fructose. Glucose conversion and fructose yield exhibited volcano-shaped curves with respect to the Mg/Al molar ratio. A maximum fructose yield was obtained by Mg-Al HT_1.5, which has the smallest crystallite size and largest BET surface area. Enhancement in the catalytic performance fo Mg-Al HT_1.5 was attributed to its abundant surface base sites caused by limitation of the growth of layered structures by substitution with Mg2+ by Al3+.
