This study aims to show the complex meaning of 'the field of the Korea Queer Culture Festival(KQCF)' by analyzing the relationship between the KQCF, anti-queer group, and the public institutions(Seoul Metropolitan Government and police). Understanding the KQCF as 'the field' emphasize that the main agents of KQCF act in close relationship with each other. Also, the concept of 'the field' makes us understand the space not only as the physical one but also as the discousive one where diverse meanings can conflict. Paradoxical space means the spaces which seem to be exclusive actually can be occupied at the same time. This explains the complex meaning of space which can not be captured in the dichotomous recognition of space. Using the concept of paradoxical space as the lens of analysis, this study focuses on the relationship between the agents of the field of KQCF, and find the politicized, complex and paradoxical meaning of KQCF. First, this study focuses on the boundaries and territories constructed by each agent. KQCF organizes boundary and territory at the Seoul Plaza, where the festival takes place. By making boundary and territory around Seoul Plaza, KQCF tries to ensure the safety and sense of belonging to the festival participants. Anti-queer group doesn't make the rigid boundary around the Daehanmun where the anti-queer rally is held. Instead, anti-queer group territorializes the Seoul Plaza to make the whole space as heteronormative space. Public institutions construct the boundary between the KQCF and the anti-queer group to prevent the conflict between two groups. However, the boundaries made by public institutions are subjective rather than objective. Also, the boundaries between the KQCF and anti-queer rally are deconstructed and reconstructed because of the infiltration or invasion of anti-queer folks. The construction and deconstruction of boundaries and territories reveal that the field of KQCF is not the exclusive space but complex overlapped space. Second, this study focuses on the symbolic meaning of Seoul Plaza. Seoul Plaza is one of the most symbolic places in South Korea. People think that the Seoul Plaza symbolizes the citizenship. The symbolic meaning of Seoul Plaza is the foundation of persistence for both KQCF and the anti-queer group. KQCF assert that the festival should be held in the Seoul Plaza because Seoul Plaza is the best place to show the existence of queer individuals. At the same time, anti-queer group insists that the KQCF should not be held in the Seoul Plaza because they think that the queer people are sexually and ethically corrupted beings. It means that the anti-queer group claims that the Seoul Plaza, a sacred citizen’s space, should not be spoiled by queers. This reminds us the incomplete and paradoxical position of queer individuals. Queer individuals have not deprived their citizenship because of their sexual orientations and/or gender identities. But queer individuals’citizenship is incomplete socially and culturally. The civil rights of queer people are always confirmed and suspected. The symbolic meaning of Seoul Plaza is connected to this incomplete and paradoxical position of queer individual. This study analyzed the multi-layered meaning of the field of KQCF as paradoxical space. Thus, this study analyzed the complex relationship and meaning of the field of the KQCF. Through this, this study argues that the meaning of space is not only the discursive one, but it is the important and actual foundation of people’s lives.
