Cesium is the most abundant and has longer half-lived gamma emissions to be stable among other radionuclides produced from nuclear power plant. Cesium can be retained in clay minerals by cation-exchange reactions. Sorbents which have high cation exchange capacity, high selectivity to remove cesium, and can be used in large application are preferable. Prussian blue is one of inorganic compounds which have high selectivity to retain cesium. This study investigated the effect of contact time of cesium adsorption, the adsorption isotherm, and mechanism of cesium adsorption in montmorillonite-Prussian blue hybrid. The effects of competitive cations such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ also been studied in this research. The kinetic adsorption of Cs+ in montmorillonite Prussian blue hybrid was fitted with pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir isotherm described well the maximum adsorption capacity of Cs+ in Montmorillonite-Prussian blue hybrid with the value 57.47 mg/g, which show higher than the maximum adsorption capacity in Montmorillonite only, 37.31 mg/g. The presence of competitive cations such as Na+ and K+ are the most effect in inhibited the adsorption of Cs+ in montmorillonite compare to Ca2+ and Mg2+. Ion exchange was the main adsorption mechanism of Cs+ in montmorillonite. The main adsorption mechanism in Montmorillonite-Prussian blue hybrid is ion trapping, followed by ion exchange, surface complexation of hydroxyl in basal plane and edges, and electrostatic binding process. Montmorillonite-Prussian blue hybrid can give a great promised for future application of cesium removal in soil and contaminated water.
