The purpose of this study is to find out find out the presence of effects of engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons on their Cognitive Flexibility and Empowerment. To achieve this research goal, surveys were conducted among 350 physically challenged residents of Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam who are participating in sports for all. The questionnaire used in this study is a scale revised and supplemented version of Lee Hyeon Soo(2011)'s physically challenged persons direct/indirect engaging in sports to measure the physically challenged persons' engaging in sports for all. To measure the cognitive flexibility, the study used a reconstructed questionnaire developed by Dennis and Vander(2010) and later translated and validated by Heo Sim Yang(2011). Also, to measure the empowerment, the study used empower scale suggested by Pensgaard and Sorensen(2002) which was later translated, revised and supplemented by Lee Hyeon Su(2008) for the purpose of the study. Followed by several statistical analyses on the collected data, including exploratory factor analysis, simple regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis with the use of SPSS 23.0 program. The research findings are as follows.
1. Effects of engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons on their Cognitive Flexibility
First, engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons has turned out to have a significant effect on Cognitive alternatives, one of the lower factors of Cognitive Flexibility. Second, engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons has turned out to have a significant effect on Cognitive control, one of the lower factors of Cognitive Flexibility.
2. Effects of engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons on their Empowerment
First, engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons has turned out to have a significant effect on individual level, one of the lower factors of Empowerment. Second, engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons has turned out to have a significant effect on group level, one of the lower factors of Empowerment. Third, engaging in sports for all by physically challenged persons has turned out to have a significant effect on social level, one of the lower factors of Empowerment.
3. Effects of Cognitive Flexibility of physically challenged persons on their Empowerment
First, Cognitive Flexibility(Cognitive alternatives, Cognitive control) of physically challenged persons, has turned out to have a significant effect on individual level, one of the lower factors of Empowerment. Second, Cognitive Flexibility(Cognitive alternatives, Cognitive control) of physically challenged persons, has turned out to have a significant effect on group level, one of the lower factors of Empowerment. Third, Cognitive Flexibility(Cognitive alternatives, Cognitive control) of physically challenged persons, has turned out to have partially a significant effect on social level, one of the lower factors of Empowerment.
Such study result indicate that physically challenged persons' engaging in sports for all is an important variable affecting cognitive flexibility and empowerment. Thus, for the active engaging in sport for all of physically challenged persons, there is a need to develop various sports for all program for the disabled, and through training professional instructors, there is a need to expand governmental support and activity to let all the disabled including physically challenged persons to not only participate for health, but to have positive value on individual, group, and social relation recovery and enhance capability. Also there is a need to improve accessibility to use surrounding facilities. For this, there must be various follow-up studies to increase physically challenged persons' engaging in sports for all.
