The purpose of this study was to understand the effect of group art therapy on the self esteem of children. The subjects of this study were 16 elementary school children in the lower grade levels who had consent of the their parents with understanding of the purpose of this study, selected from a group of children recommended by a social worker at a children's center in District H of City D for having a need for improvement in their self esteem. The children were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 8 children in each group. The program was undertaken from June to August of 2017, once per week, 90 minutes for each session, for a total of 12 sessions. The assessment tool used in the study was the Self Esteem Inventory (SEI) of Jong-Sook Kim (2007), which is the new edition the SEI of Boga Choi and Gweyeon Jeon (1993), which in turn is the reorganization of the research of Coopersmith(1967) and Pope, McHale and Chaigheda (1988). For the treatment of the collected data, an independent sample t-test was conducted using SPSS Version 22.0 in order to first verify compatibility between the experimental group and the control group. Also, in order to verify the effectiveness of the program, the Repeated Measure ANOVA was conducted using the pre-test and post-test scores for general self esteem of the experimental group and the control group as well as for each subscale factor. The findings of this study are as follows: First, group art therapy was found to be effective in enhancing general self esteem of the children. Second, group art therapy was found to be effective for self esteem for each subscale category. Therefore, it has been found by this study that group art therapy is effective in enhancing self esteem of children.
