The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of companion plants care on mental health, loneliness scale and life satisfaction of the elderly people living alone. The study was conducted from May to October 2017. A total of two companion plants were provided for each elderly people living alone. Ivy (Hedera helix) was provided for the first time and rubber tree (Ficus elastica 'Robusta') was provided for the second visit two months later. When the basic plant died on the second visit, a spearflower (Ardisia japonica) was provided for the first time. After two months, when the plant died in the third visit, Epipremnum (Epipremnum aureum) was given and a second replacement was made. The therapist personally visited and gave instructions on how to care for companion plants and gave emotional support. In addition, elderly people living alone had to give and call their companion plant a nickname and talk to the companion plant in their everyday lives, including before and after the bedtime or going out. The subjects of the study were the elderly people living alone in S city, consisting of a control group of 24 people who did not take care of the companion plants and an experimental group of 280 people who were provided with companion plants and took care of it. Mental health, loneliness scale, and life satisfaction of the elderly were examined before and after the experiment and only the experimental group was tested to determine their satisfaction with the companion plants. The final analysis target was 18 people in control group and 225 people in experiment group, totaling 243 people. After caring for companion plants, significant improvements were made in all variables of mental health for the elderly people living alone in the experimental group. These variables include anxiety, social maladjustment, depression, going out element and the total score of mental health. Except for going out element, the comparison of controls with experimental groups showed a significant improvement in anxiety, social maladjustment, depression, and total score, which resulted in a positive effect on mental health. In the experimental group, the mental health score of men was significantly higher than for women, making men more effective at mental health. The care of companion plants by elderly people living alone has significantly reduced the variables of loneliness in the experimental group. These variables include total score of loneliness, lack of intimacy, social others and belonging. Comparison between the control group and the experiment group of loneliness showed no significant difference in terms of lack of intimacy and social others. However lack of belonging and the total score of loneliness were significantly reduced, which indicates that the companion plant was effective in reducing loneliness. The companion plant was more effective in reducing loneliness of elderly men living alone than in elderly women living alone, due to the fact that the lack of intimacy and belonging and the total score of loneliness of elderly men living alone were significantly lower than those of elderly women living alone. The life satisfaction of elderly people living alone in the experimental group was affected by the care of the companion plants so that except for the past satisfaction with life, the current satisfaction with life and future satisfaction with life showed significant improvements. It was found that the effects of companion plants on elderly men living alone were greater as the satisfaction with their lives improved significantly compared to that of women. Mental health and life satisfaction were significantly higher and loneliness score was significantly lower in the group without the replacement plant than in the group with replacement plant due to plant deaths. The more the elderly people living alone took care of the companion plants, the less the plants died, and attachment was created to improve mental health and life satisfaction loneliness was also decreased. The majority of the elderly people living alone answered that they were helpful in the satisfaction survey after taking care of the companion plants. Emotional support was the most common in the areas where companion plant care was helpful. This followed by mental, physical and social support, respectively. The question of companion plants contributing to the improvement of the indoor living environment showed a positive response, which was eight times larger than the negative one. These results are considered to be due to the fact that the companion plant is luxurious and ornamental plant. In addition, detailed training on the benefits of improvement of indoor environment of plants and air purification along with the characteristics of the plants during the visit was considered to be the reason of high satisfaction. The group without plant replacement responded that the companion plant is helpful to the indoor environment the most, followed by the group with one plant replacement and the group with two plant replacements, respectively. The most favorite activity among the elderly people living alone while taking care of the companion plants was plant management, followed by talking with companion plants, watering the plant and light irradiation, respectively. Plant management (leaf wipe, dry leaf removal, pollen cleaning, et cetra) showed that they liked activities that could give sustained attention. In the case of talking with companion plants, it is the result that they recognized the companion plant as their communication partner, due to the task that the elderly people living alone call the nickname of the companion plant and talk to the companion plant in their everyday lives, including before and after the bedtime or going out. Watering the plant is thought to have been satisfactory as it can give plants what they need. Other than these, just watching was most frequent. Elderly people who have difficulty in taking active care for health reasons seem to have been involved in caring activities passively. Men preferred to water plants, and 11.6% more women than men preferred to have a conversation with their companion plants. As to whether or not they would like to take care of a new companion plant, the answer to wanting to take care of a new companion plant was more than six times more than a negative one. A positive response was more than seven times higher than a negative response in the question of whether elderly people living alone would like to talk to the other person about the companion plants. In conclusion, the companion plant care activity is effective for improving the mental health and life satisfaction of the elderly people living alone, and it can help reduce loneliness. It is judged that companion plant can contribute sufficiently to improve morale by providing the effect of improvement of living environment and emotional pleasure in daily life for the elderly people living alone with little opportunity to contact others.
