Thanks to the development of medical technology and the improvement of living standard, Korean people showed increasing interest in their health. As a result, the average life span of Koreans has been extended, and Korea has entered an aged society where a 14% of the population are 65 years old or older as of this year. Population of the elderly increased rapidly and dementia, which is the representative geriatric disease, is emerging as a serious social problem in modern society. The elderly with severe dementia have a lack of ability to express themselves due to a fall in cognitive ability and a decrease in memory and language ability. And they are very likely to feel loneliness, alienation, depression, and psychological isolation due to difficulty in proper interaction with others. The purpose of this study is to provide an opportunity to the elderly with severe dementia who lack the ability to express themselves through the experience of art media and group art therapy to express their thought, feeling, and emotion linguistically, in an effort to help them to lead their everyday life positively in the future through increased interaction with other members. As for the target of this study, we selected 3 elderly women with dementia, residing in S Nursing Home for the Elderly in Seoul, who are 80 years old or older and whose K-MMSE score is 14 or less. The study was implemented after an agreement of participation was received from the families concerned. A total of 22 therapy sessions were held, once a week for 60 minutes, and the case studies were conducted on 12 sessions which showed a noticeable behavior change. To verify the progress of the disease of the elderly with dementia, Korean K-MMSE was conducted in advance, and the group art therapy program for the elderly with severe dementia was revised and supplemented before application. Based on the observations and records of participants' behavior change, such materials as interview recording, observation log, and evaluations were collected and analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, through the group art therapy program, behavior change was identified which showed an increase in interaction among the elderly with severe dementia. Second, the group art therapy program had a positive effect on enhancement of linguistic self-expression of the elderly with severe dementia. Third, art work enabled the elderly with dementia to recall their memories through creative activities, and this action has provided an occasion to re-experience past memories and evoke a positive emotion. It is hoped that this study will provide the basic knowledge of art therapy for the elderly with severe dementia who receive less program benefit than those with mild dementia by increasing our interest in the former and informing the need for more research.
