This study sought to examine response characteristics in depression screening in the elderly when Beck Depression Inventory and Draw-A-Story Test are used in tandem, and evaluated the results of projective testing, which was unobserved by the questionnaire to identify the advantages of Draw-A-Story Test. From February 15, 2017 to June 8, 2017, Beck Depression Inventory and Draw-A-Story Test were administered to men and women aged 65 years and over, in residential, medical, and leisure welfare facilities for the elderly as well as senior medical and educational institutions in Jeollabuk-do. Out of the 1,286 respondents who agreed to participate, 196 were deemed unsuitable for the study, and the data of the remaining 1,090 respondents were used in the final analysis. The analysis was conducted using the SPSS 22.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: First, a cross-over analysis of the Beck Depression Inventory and Draw-A-Story Test results showed differences in the geriatric depression score due to the differing properties of each method. Secondly, in the Beck Depression Inventory and Draw-A-Story Test, the cross-over analysis resulted in an overlap percentage of those who showed depressive tendencies, as well as a standalone percentage in those who showed positive responses only to the Draw-A-Story Test. The following conclusion was drawn from the above results: Although both the Beck Depression Inventory and Draw-A-Story Test are proven to be effective tools for depression screening, their inherent strengths and weakness resulted in the manifestation of both overlapping and standalone percentages. The standalone percentage of the Draw-A-Story Test, which was not observed for the Beck Depression Inventory, offered indications of depression among the elderly that were not obvious to their subsyndromal nature. In this case, art acted as a medium through which the elderly could freely express the internal stories that have accumulated over their lifetime. Art also helps participants access negative aspects of their stories with ease by allowing them to distance themselves from their problems. The Beck Depression Inventory, on the other hand, has limits in bringing out the internal anguish and drama of the respondent and its responses may be subject to subconscious distortion. These limitations could hinder the detection of latent depression in the elderly. In conclusion, the Draw-A-Story Test has the potential to diagnose latent depression, which may be overlooked in clinical settings, by offering the testee a chance to express one's inner self through art and storytelling. Hence, using the Draw-A-Story Test in conjunction with other screening methods of depression can strengthen the validity of their results.
