The purpose of this study is to analyze damaged patterns by outside flame of the self regulating heating cable and belt heater. This study analyzed the trace heating regulation, flame supply experiments, surfaces and cross sections of the burnt self regulating heating cable and belt heater. In addition, it performed metallic structure of them. The test room temperature and relative humidity were maintained at 20~22[℃] and 18±2[%]. The domestic standard for the tracing heating was analyzed by KS C IEC 60079-30-2, 60800, KOSHA GUIDE E-68-2012. Heating rays were analyzed for use by considering Maximum Withstand Temperature(MWT) and Heating Value(HV). The application range of heating rays are 300[V]/500[V] in accordance with KS C IEC and less than 400[V] in Standards and Evaluation Criteria of Electrical Equipment. KS C IEC 60079-30-2 and KOSHA GUIDE E-68-2012 specify its design and maintenance. The device to supply a flame to the self regulating heating cable and belt heater using a portable gas torch was configured based on the KS C IEC 60079-30-1. The flame provided the self regulating heating cable to 30[sec], belt heaters to 20[sec] respectively. The flame was applied at 60° from the left bottom of the self regulating heating cable and the belt heater. The distance between the torch nozzle tip and the self regulating heating cable was 180[mm]. The flame length was maintained at approximately 80[mm]. The self regulating heating cable used for this study are MWT 85[℃], 30[W/m] and MWT 65[℃], 15[W/m]. Also, the belt heater was used for 20[W/m]. The surface analysis of the self regulating heating cable and belt heater was taken by a digital camera. The cross-section analysis was used by a stereoscopic microscope, and the metallic structure of the heating element was analyzed by a metallurgical microscope. It was found that rising combustion and turbulent flow were dominant when combustion progressed with a flame ignited the self regulating heating cable. After the combustion progressed for 30[sec], the combustion has continued even if remove a flame. The surface analysis of the burnt and damaged the self regulating heating cable which was exposed to the flame directly were marked carbonization patterns like wool cloud. Especially, the surface which was burned by the outside flame was colorless and rough. It was found that the sheath of the self regulating heating cable were peeled off and the small hole was seen to be irregularly generated. These characteristics are proved to be appeared patterns when it is degraded by fire heat. The cross section analysis of the self regulating heating cable which was damaged by outside the flame showed that its inside was more expand than normal product. It was seen irregular voids the sheath of the self regulating heating cable. Heating element was found holes with parts of peel off. The portion of conduct was not melted and could not be checked for damaged by burning. The analysis of metallic structure of the burnt self regulating heating cable showed particles arranged in dense and irregular directions. The particles of metallic structure grew larger than normal products. It is analyzed to be a clue that determines the outside flame is affected. The part of conduct was not melted and could not be found damaged by burning. It is thought that the conductor is not melted due to short time to supply the flame by the portable gas torch. It is analyzed that the belt heater is heating wire wrapped with nichrome wires in a glass fiber and insulated the sheath with silicone rubber material. The result of analysis on combustion shape of the belt heater showed a similar that of the self regulating heating cable. While the combustion progressed for 30[sec], the combustion has continued even if remove the flame. The surface analysis of the belt heater which was exposed to the flame directly indicated that lose its original color and ash colored powder formed on the surface. This is the only feature that occurs when the belt heater is damaged by the outside flame. In other words, it is the criteria to prove to be caused by external flame in the fire site. The cross section analysis of the burnt belt heater was part of the damaged and deformed of the sheath. The analysis of metallic structure of the burnt belt heater represented that the nichrome of heating element was eliminated from the fiber glass and was unable to identify the metal structure. As can be seen from the above study results, the characteristic patterns of the surface, cross section, metallic structure of the self regulating heating cable and the belt heater were analyzed by the outside flames. While fire investigation is conducted from the scene of accidents, it will be possible to scientifically prove the type of supplied energy, the cause of the fire by analyzing damage patterns with traces melting of the collected self regulating heating cable and belt heater.
