The purpose of this study was to investigate 1) the effect of play plan and evaluation activity, performed in early childhood education institutions, on children’s self-regulation, and 2) the relative influence of children’s age, play plan and evaluation activity, and mother’s verbal control on children’s self-regulation’s sub-dimensions. The subjects were 46 pairs of 50-71 months old children and their mothers. Children were in one of the classrooms with three and four years old mixed age group among three workplace child care centers in Seoul (experimental group: 23 pairs, control group: 23 pairs). Children in the experimental group had practiced free choice play including play plan and evaluation activity, on the contrary, Children in the control group had practiced free choice play skipping the play plan and evaluation activity, over a period of 8 weeks This study measured children’s self-regulation by teachers' responses to a self-rating scale which is modified for teachers by Hwa Ja Kim (2009) from the tool for parents developed by Jung Ran Lee (2003). Mother’s verbal control is estimated by a rating tool responded by mothers, developed by Kyung Hee Lee and Ok Boon Jung (1994) and revised by Jin-sung Lee (2006) The study yielded a mean and standard deviation of each variable and an independent sample t-test to examine the differences between experimental and control group children’s general tendency of self-regulation and mother’s verbal control. The data were analyzed by paired t-test to examine the effect of play plan and evaluation activity. And the study yielded partial correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis to estimate the influence of children’s age, play plan and evaluation, and mother’s verbal control on children’s self-regulation: self-estimation, self-determination, restraint of a behavior, emotionalism. The summary of this study’s results as follows: First, as a result of the investigation of the implication of play plan and evaluation activity on children’s self-regulation, experimental group children who practiced play plan and evaluation activity showed improvement in self-estimation, self-determination, and emotionalism which is subfactors of self-regulation. Second, when we estimate of relative influence among play plan and evaluation activity, children’s age, and mother’s verbal control, play plan and evaluation activity and mother’s verbal control reported high influence on children’s self-regulation. Specifically, self-estimation was influenced by play plan and evaluation activity and mother’s verbal control, and self-determination was affected by play plan and evaluation activity, mother’s verbal control, and children’s age, and emotionalism was significantly influenced by only mother’s verbal control. In conclusion, the experience that children plan the play and evaluate is the activity is helpful to develop their self regulation-especially self-estimation and self-determination. Also, the result shows that mother’s verbal control profoundly influence emotionalism among children’s self-regulation.
