(Kd,I≈1,000 L ㎏–1 at Cw=10 ㎍ L-1) 세슘은 오직 400 ℃에서 생성된 참나무에 대해서만 우수한 흡착능을 보였다 (Kd,Cs≈400 L ㎏-1 at Cw=10 ㎍ L-1).

Soil and groundwater environments could be contaminated by the volatile radioactive cesium and iodine through wet/dry deposition of aerosols at early stage of nuclear accidents. Black carbons (BC) such as char and charcoal are ubiquitous materials in soil and sediments, because they are naturally formed by incomplete combustion process of trees during a forest fire and agriculture burning. Although the BC could be geochemically reacted with radionuclides, The sorption properties of BC were rarely studied for radionuclides. The goal of this study is to evaluate the adsorption properties of cesium and iodine to BC materials under various combustion conditions and understand the adsorption mechanisms. The BC materials were produced through combustion in a laboratory using a xylem of oak and pine trees under various final temperate and ramp rate conditions. The BC was characterized by elemental analysis, BET surface area, SEM, 13C-NMR, FTIR and XPS, and used for sorption batch experiments with cesium and iodine. Atomic ratio (H/C and O/C) and surface area increased with rise of final temperature regardless of ramp rate. The iodine was strongly sorbed by the BC produced at 600 ℃ (Kd,I≈1,000 L ㎏-1) regardless of tree species, while the uptake of cesium occurred only with the oak BC produced at 400 ℃ (Kd,Cs≈400 L ㎏-1). These sorption properties are caused by different sorption mechanisms between cesium and iodine. The FTIR and XPS results indicated that cesium was predominantly reacted with oxygen-containing functionalities on the BC surface. In contrast, iodine uptake occurs through covalent bonding with carbon atom in aromatic structures of BC. The chemical structure and functionalities could be significantly controlled by final temperature of BC production rather than ramp rate. These results implied that diverse BC materials in soils and sediments play an important role on the distribution and geochemical fate of radioactive cesium and iodine.
