When a globular cluster (GC) undergoes dynamical evolution through two-body interactions, its central region shrinks and increases in density, which is called core collapse. This phenomenon can explain the observation of so-called “collapsed-core clusters”, GCs whose surface density profile has a central sharp peak, unlike King model-like GCs. But, central peaks in surface brightness are not sufficient to distinguish collapsed-core clusters from other GCs. In this paper, the core collapse of a GC is observed in direct N-body simulations. We run a set of 32000-particle simulations with NBODY6, a state-of-the-art direct summation code. Every simulation follows power-law initial mass function, and primordial binaries and stellar evolution are not included. Velocity dispersion of stars as a function of stellar mass, σ(m) is investigated over time in a wide range of power-law indices of IMF. Full energy equipartition is never achieved in any case. Furthermore, contrary to the expectations of equipartition, the most massive stars have the larger stellar velocity dispersion. We choose to call this phenomenon “global energy divergence”, which we propose as an indicator of core collapse. This indicator is independent of surface brightness arguments. Thanks to Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data and the recent GAIA data release, opportunities for using such indicator in actual observations are plentiful. This approach would shed light on the dynamical mechanism of core collapse by identifying collapsed-core clusters more reliably, and may help reveal physical properties of GC unclear so far, such as central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH).
