The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance(CO-OP) on occupational performance and executive function in children with autism spectrum disorder. The participants of the study were 3 children, aged 8 years, with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), having an above 85 intelligence. A single-subject ABA trial design was employed. A total of 16 experimental sessions(3 baseline, 10 intervention, 3 post-intervention) were conducted. The intervention was conducted twice a week for 60 minutes for 10 sessions in total. Based on the CO-OP protocol, Three target tasks were selected for each participants, two were conducted as training tasks, and one was defined as untrained task and the effects of generalization were examined. Dependent variables were occupational performance and executive function. The main outcome measure used in this study was Canadian Occupational Performance Measure(COPM), Performance Quality Rating Scale(PQRS). In order to identify the changes of overall executive function, Children's Kitchen Task Assessment (CKTA), Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Second Edition (BRIEF-2) was tested. Three aspects of executive functions, including planning, mental flexibility, inhibition were measured by Korean Developmental Scoring System for the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure(K-DSS-ROCF), Tower of London(TOL), Children's Color Trails Test(CCTT), Stroop Color and Word Test(STROOP). For comparison, PQRS, TOL, CCTT, STROOP scores for each session were graphed and visually analyzed. pre-intervention and post-intervention COPM, CKTA, BRIEF-2, K-DSS-ROCF scores were plotted and tabled. The results were as follows: (1) Improved PQRS scores were observed, and these results were paralleled by improved COPM ratings of performance and satisfaction. (2) participants were generalized and transferred their learning to their home and school environments. (3) CKTA and BRIEF-2, which evaluate the overall executive function, were able to identify positive changes before and after intervention. In addition, through the increase in K-DSS-ROCF & TOL total score, CCTT completion time, and STROOP total score, participants showed improvement in planning, cognitive flexibility, and inhibition ability. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that the CO-OP has a positive effect on improving occupational performance and executive function in children with autism spectrum disorder.
