This research studied the way in which taekwondo lessons bring about effects on school violence and personality of highschool students and make changes in them. In order to achieve the aim of the research, six of the students who had taken taekwondo lessons over one year at J highschool located in Gyeongi province were selected for a continuous observation, in-depth interviews and keeping records of the taekwondo lessons so that their changes would be documented for this investigation.
In addition, it was the researcher as the official instructor of taekwondo model school as well as an officially recognised fifth grade taekwondo master who gave the taekwondo lessons to the six selected students during PE classes at the highschool for the one year period. The focus of the lessons was on maintaining sound spirit and personality of the students.
The data used in this research were collected from a literature review, in-depth interviews, action observation, and additional interviews with other people relate with the six students. The content of the data was summarized to draw a conclusion as follows:
First, the comparison of preferences for school classes between before and after the taekwondo lessons at the highschool shows positive changes in all of the six students while there are differences in the level of preference. The students agreed that satisfaction from achieving their goals and passing taekwondo belt tests after the completion of the one year course seemed to have been one of the most influential reasons for the positive changes.
Second, all of the six participants of this study demonstrated a positive transition against aggressive behaviour at the school. It appear to be the nature of taekwondo as martial arts which cut down the behaviour disregarding opponents or being violent as it encourages its practitioners to respect opponents.
Third, the investigation into the effect of taewondo lessons on personality factors also indicated positive changes. As this small scale research limits investigating all of the known factors of personality, four factors valued in taekwondo including ettiquette, confidence, consideration and the law-abiding spirit were used to judge its results. Consequentially, at least one or more of the four factors of all of the six research participants resulted in making positive changes in their behaviours.
To sum it all up, the application of taewondo to PE classes at the highschool seems to be able to become part of personality education positively influencing a number of personality factors. Such positively developed personality factors can help the students grow and ease their violent behaviour as they were encouraged to respect others. Moreover, the level of satisfaction increased after taking the taekwondo lessons and this positive change was thought to help the students’s school life regardless of the differences in the level of satisfaction.
