China, a huge country which accounts for one-fifth of the world’s population, also has the lowest fertility rate in the world. The low birth rate, in conjunction with population ageing, has led to the declining of working-age population ratio and affected its economic vitality due to the increasing fiscal burdens and household savings reserved for the support of the elderly people. In May 2017, an international credit rating agency, Moody’s downgraded China’s sovereign credit rating on the grounds of its rapid population ageing. This study, based on an analysis of the values and social conditions regarding marriage reflected in ‘Let’s Get Married 咱们结婚吧’, a popular Chinese TV drama, examines the causes of Chinese contemporary population problems, on the one hand, and explores the policy implications by comparatively reviewing the cases of advanced countries which have successfully recovered fertility rate. Through the reactions of various characters during the process of finding a job, marriage, affair, divorce and reunion, the modern Chinese views of individual life, marriage and family can be read. According to the review of the literature, historical research, character analysis and keyword analysis of the drama ‘Let’s Get Married - 咱们结婚吧’, the declining fertility rate is related to not only population policy, but conflict between pragmatic values of individuals transformed for survival in the process of industrialization and urbanization developed under the capitalist economic system and social structure and class such as gender and social status. In the topic of “Survival”, non-marriage can be an option for modern people. Nevertheless, it emphasizes that those who seek true happiness were those who dreamed of ordinary and simple happiness through the soulmate union. The number of non-married people is increasing as the view of marriage and non-marriage, individual and community, and family changes. However, it is necessary to consider whether involuntary non-marriage increases by circumstances. Society should change so that the non-marriage can not become an option without an alternative to the generation, those who give up dating, marriage, and having kids. This study indicates the population problem needs to be viewed with the social structure problem and improvement awareness efforts through the integrated implementation of policies such as job, welfare, gender equality, and childcare infrastructure.
