A Study on Charlie Parker’s Improvisation Techniques : Analysis of His Songs from 1940’s to 1950’s원문보기

Jazz has gone through a lot of changes and developments within a short amount of time due to the circumstances and the atmosphere of the society. 1940’s was the most important era in jazz history, as it is the era when the beginning of modern jazz, Bebop emerged. Since Bebop was aimed toward pure art contrary to swing which was more popular, it attracted the attentions of musicians rather than the public’s. As a result, Bebop obtained a certain independence that allowed it to be recognized of its value and to evolve as an artistic genre. In order for players to perform with depth, it is necessary to study this development process by choosing an artist and his or her signature songs. This thesis elects to dissect the saxophonist Charlie Parker’s improvisation techniques. Charlie Parker was a leading figure in the foundation of Bebop–he was also a renowned Bebop artist who was called “the innovator of jazz”. He presented his exuberant ideas and lyricism with such brilliant technique that critics regard him as the genius alto sax player/composer who established the form of Bebop jazz improvisation. Many musicians after Charlie Parker have studied his improvisation as the textbook of jazz, and his music became the standard of all jazz. He explored many possibilities of Bebop and settled it in as one of the mainstreams of jazz. Moreover, Charlie Parker influenced the diversification of style and genre of jazz. In this paper, the author first researched Charlie Parker’s musical background and the major works in his musical career, and then categorized them by different musical structures and techniques. Charlie Parker’s improvisations showed frequent application of approach, altered, tritone substitution and blues phrase and he suggested various motives that are commonly used in Bebop jazz. The characteristics found in his music are as follows: Charlie Parker’s music differed drastically from the 1930’s swing in that he highlighted improvisation by developing melody, harmony and rhythm based on repetition of chords. His harmonic structure was essentially simple but ostensibly complex, that led many critics to believe Bebop has its roots in radical ideas. Charlie Parker discovered how to use higher intervals of chords as melody line and influenced many musicians to emulate his new melodic and harmonic approach. He also brought the use of blue note of the fifth degree to fashion and had dissonant tones absorbed into harmonic structure. He selectively used substitute chords that made the chord progression more vibrant and added dissonant tones into chordal structure while generally maintaining the function of harmony, which made a huge impact on melodic style of improvisation. In addition, he erratically arranged 8th notes and 16th notes with triplets and this became a characteristic technique of Bebop style. The contributions of his improvisation on development of music was immense: his musical phrasing and new devices that came with his chord progression comprised the fundamentals of jazz for forty years to come. The selected works in this paper are from Charlie Paker Omnibook, the bible for every musicians in the world learning jazz. The ones that began the A-A-B-A style rhythm change–they are the most common style in jazz, changing melody based on the same code progression–the A-A-B-C style ones that uses contrafact, and the ones that are frequently quoted as the main theme of F blues–the basics in jazz jam sessions and ensemble–are chosen. These songs distinctly show Charlie Parker’s Chromatic line, also known as the Bebop Scale, and they show the early stage of the typical Bebop–the Bebop classics. Plus, these are the ones that made it to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1989. This study aims to understand Charlie Parker’s musical traits and style through analyzing and studying his major works in Charlie Paker Omnibook. Furthermore, this study will provide a quick view of the theoretical background and musical characteristics of Bebop, the trend that brought so much developments and changes in jazz music. Hopefully, this thesis will be useful to every musician, including saxophonists, in deepening their understanding of music and finding a new path in developing improvisations.
