Postmodernism and feminism that share cultural pluralism have made an active alliance with each other along with the stream of the times, and feminism has gone beyond women's liberation movement, developing into postmodern feminism that values individual people's diverse identity. Postmodern feminism wields a positive influence on modern society not only by bringing up gender inequity issues in every part of daily life but by dealing with issues on racism and the alienation of the socially disadvantaged in pursuit of communication and coexistence with others. The arts and fashion that are based on postmodern feminism have been instrumental in reforming male-dominated social structure and sexist cultural norms by reflecting social messages that stress women's human rights and the importance of gender equity. Contemporary female artists and fashion designers have raised their voices of resistance through their popular art works and on the runway to subjectify women's lives that have been objectified from men's perspective. They shed new light on the significance of the existence of various female subjects who have long been marginalized and excluded, and fashion that represents women's ego- identity has grafted the thought of postmodern feminism onto daily routine life in a natural way. Nowadays, fashion is no longer mere consumer goods for sale. Instead, it serves as a cultural medium to convey the values, tastes and social messages of individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine the works and fashion collections of female artists, which reflected messages of postmodern feminism that is taking a major step into humanism, and to categorize the messages represented both in fashion and the arts. Ultimately, this study is meaningful in that it attempted to develop designs for women's clothing by reflecting messages of postmodern feminism and to present trendy and sensual fashion styles that could practice feminism in everyday life. As for the research method, literatures of postmodern feminism and the arts, published domestic theses, dissertations and articles, news, arts-related websites and domestic and foreign feminism- related social network services were analyzed for reference. To analyze fashion collections, domestic and foreign fashion magazines, fashion collection websites and YouTube fashion channels were investigated, and fashion shows were watched. After a comprehensive overview of postmodern feminist art works and fashion collection cases was obtained, eight fashion designs that reflected messages of postmodern feminist art were produced based on the results of an analysis of the fashion trend in 2018. The theoretical background of the first-, second- and third-wave feminist movements were investigated by time period, and messages of equity, difference, liberation and coexistence were extracted from the art works that were released in the genres of picture, photograph, crafts, installation art, performance and film from around the 1970s to the present time in 2018, during which feminist art began in earnest mainly by female artists. When the fashion collection cases were analyzed, the four distinctive messages of equity, difference, liberation and coexistence that postmodern feminist art intended to convey were embodied respectively in power dressing, romanticism, eroticism and gender blending styles in the field of fashion. First, the message of equity in postmodern feminist art is connected to power dressing style in fashion. Female artists have built their own world of art, which was critical of society, in order to get recognized as equally as male artists, and they resisted and challenged the male-oriented art world. Fashion designers introduced slogan fashion that bluntly criticized a gender discrimination issue and sought after gender equity. In addition, they highlighted the upper body by using overfit, straight silhouette and power shoulder that emphasize a tough female image, and materials that symbolized wealth and power such as wool, leather, animal prints and fur were used to present the kind of fashion that represented the extension of women's human rights. Second, the message of difference in postmodern feminist art was embodied in the style of romanticism in fashion. Female artists perceived that girlishness and femininity which are created by the differences between men and women in experience and taste are unique sensitivity that only women have. In order to specialize handicraft as a feminine art pattern, they actively conducted fashion and trimming campaigns that needed delicate manual skills such as lettering embroidery, applique, quilt, etc. Fashion designers presented two kinds of femininity-oriented fashion. One was a girlish style that accentuated the image of a girl by using bright or pastel colors and materials of these tones, and the other was feminine fashion that added trimmings like laces, ribbons, ruffles, beads, embroidery and flowers to elegant silhouettes such as A-line, X-line and trapeze line in order to emphasize femininity. Third, the message of liberation in postmodern feminist art was embodied in the style of eroticism in fashion. Female artists brought particular areas of their bodies and women's sexuality to the forefront to depart from the oppressive patriarchal system, and they worked both as models and artists to express their will to achieve sexual liberation. Fashion designers made use of diaphanous chiffon, lace and mesh materials to show see-through fashion, which accentuates one's own body on purpose, and infra fashion, which stresses bold and erotic images by switching the positions of underwear and outer garment. Fourth, the message of coexistence in postmodern feminist art was embodied in gender blending style in fashion. Modern female artists acknowledged the diversity and fluidity of gender and presented art works reflecting their individuality and the freedom of sexual orientation to resist rational norms and gender essentialism that distinguished femininity from masculinity. They injected both masculinity and femininity into a suit of clothes to depart from conventional and stereotyped designs for women's clothing and men's wear. The gender-neutral gender blending style that borrows the unique designs for the opposite gender destroys the absolute gender segregation of fashion and conveys a message on the coexistence of both genders. To develop fashion designs by reflecting the messages of postmodern feminist art, the emphasis was placed on color, materials, silhouette and the combination of details. As for the composition of the works, eight works were produced. Two works were of power dressing style, which reflected the message of equity; two, of romanticism style, the message of difference; two, of eroticism style, the message of liberation; two, of gender blending style, the message of coexistence. In Work I, the me-too campaign was selected as a motif, which was rooted in the feminism movement that resisted discrimination against women, oppression and exploitation, and sweat shirt and slacks that are unisex fashion items which stand for gender equity were produced to accentuate casual styling. On the sweat shirt, an illustration that showed the image of "Oprah Winfrey" who is a global icon of feminism was combined with the background image of "Wonder Woman," and digital printing was used to print it. And social messages on "#METOO," "#WITHYOU" and “#TIMES UP" were emphasized. Work Ⅱ is a long coat that put stress on the image of strong modern women and expressed the message of equity. That was designed to make a nimble and straightforward silhouette stand out, and black enamel material, roughly cracked leather material and leather material of cherry tomato color added by wire-shaped stitch trimmings were all mixed to create a militant and chic image. The parts of epaulets, back wings, cuffs flaps and waistband were decorated with studs to accentuate a powerful image of women. Work Ⅲ is a design of a two-piece suit that consisted of a blouse and a skirt whose materials, colors and silhouettes that made lovely and soft impressions were all harmonized. This work represents the message of difference. The neckline of the tweed blouse that mixed light pink and white was added by a scallop collar to make it look more frothy, and the skirt is a miniskirt that combined a tutu skirt and a tiered skirt, which are worn by ballerinas, to stress an image of romantic lively girls. The detachable ribbon brooch delivered the ideal message of feminism by carving a phrase "Girls can do anything" on it. Work Ⅳ is a ruffled dress of fit-and-flare silhouette whose delicate and sensuous design accentuates a feminine taste. This work represents the message of difference. The colors that made a warm impression like white, meadowlark, mint and orange were combined to highlight a womanly image. For the left shoulder, a ribbon was produced by carving on it a message "The future is female" that emphasizes women and the future in order to have a positive outlook on the future of feminism. Work Ⅴ is a jumpsuit of eroticism style that reflected an infra fashion design, and that represents the message of liberation. The brassiere part of the front was decorated with laces and frills along the breast line, and there were deep side slits in the hems of the pants to emphasize a sexy image. On the rear, texts "Liberation" and "My body my rules" were craved on the fabric to reflect the message of women's liberation. Work Ⅵ is a see-through dress that accentuates a sensual image. This work represents the message of women's liberation. There was a deep V-cut from the central neckline to the waist line, and it was trimmed with a velvet ribbon to stress an erotic image. The materials that projected the body such as lace, nobang, embroidery and mesh were used to reveal the message of liberation in a metaphorical way. Work Ⅶ is a T-shirt for women that showed a man's body on the front and rear through digital printing. That bluntly represented gender blending that femininity and masculinity are naturally fused. The midiskirt that was cut out to make the left and the right unbalanced was made from rainbow-colored pleats fabric, which stands for the harmony and coexistence of mankind, and from dotted fabric, which is trendy. The two kinds of fabric were overlapped. The coexistence of both genders was sought after, and fabric blocking and asymmetrical silhouette were used to depart from stereotyped designs. And a message on respect for diversity was delivered. Work Ⅷ is a tailored vest, which has been classified as a manly fashion item. That was added by snap buttons and detachable womanly ruffles to represent the gender-neutral gender blending style. On the rear, messages "Feminism is for everybody" and "If not me who? If not now when?" were craved through digital printing. The messages put emphasis on the humanism of coexistence, gender-equity consciousness and its practice that postmodern feminism pursues. In this study, the consciousness of feminism that individuals wanted to advocate was connected with the artistic and unique fashion designs in the fashion design works that reflected the messages of postmodern feminism art. It suggests that it's possible to make feminism more accessible and familiar in daily routine life when the messages of equity, difference, liberation and coexistence that appear in postmodern feminist art are combined with fashion. To keep up with the recent global trend of feminism, sustained research should be implemented to analyze messages of postmodern feminism that are reflected in the collections of domestic fashion designers, and research efforts on fashion designs of postmodern feminism are expected to be followed by the wave of change toward gender equity.
They injected both masculinity and femininity into a suit of clothes to depart from conventional and stereotyped designs for women's clothing and men's wear.
