English education in Korea emphasizes communication- centered learning. For good communication, speakers should develop the capability to deliver messages. English messages are highly influenced by suprasegmental features as well as segmental features. Suprasegmentals refer to prosodic systems such as stress and intonation. English stress consists of loudness, duration, and pitch. This study focuses on loudness, which is measured from a stressed syllable in a word. The purpose of this paper is to examine Korean learners’ English stress production, especially that of Kyungsang speakers. A 10-week course on English stress was provided to 9 female learners studying at a university located in Busan. Research aims are as follows. The first is to compare English stress production of Korean learners with that of native English speakers. The second is to verify the effect of the given instruction by comparing the difference of intensity measurements between Korean learners’ pre-recording and post-recording. In the experiment, both Korean learners and native speakers were recorded reading the same material. In the recordings, the intensity of the stressed syllables was measured and examined. The measurements were used to implement one-way ANOVA and paired-samples T-test using IBM SPSS Statistics 23. The results of the statistical analysis are as follows. Firstly, Korean learners’ English stress production is different from native speakers’. The average intensity of Korean learners’ production is notably lower than the native speakers’. However, there are a couple of words whose intensity was similar to the native speakers’ production. Such words are easy to produce because they consist of only one or two syllables. Secondly, when compared with the intensity from Korean learners’ pre-recording, the measurement from post-recording improved on average. This improvement suggests that the English stress instruction was effective even though it is not statistically meaningful.
