Recently, damages to coastal zone such as coastal erosion and destruction of coastal structure due to high swell wave and sea level rise caused by climate change have been frequently happened. Kkotji beach is one of coastal regions losing role of bathing beach. In this study, present situations and causes of costal erosion at Kkotji beach were investigated to plan a countermeasure of coastal erosion, and countermeasure was computed by a numerical model. Numerical computations for water circulations, wave deformations, and nearshore current generated by incident wave were carried out, furthermore, morphological variations were also simulated by combining these models. Water circulations and nearshore currents were computed by EFDC model, and wave fields were computed by SWAN model. Input conditions for the numerical models were verified by recent ocean observation and prior data, and then efficacy of countermeasure of coastal erosion were predicted with verified input condition. First, numerical computations for tidal currents were conducted to reproduce phenomena of water level and tidal current around Kkotji beach, and to provide input conditions for numerical model to simulate bathymetric change due to nearshore current generated by incident wave and tidal current. Computational domains are 6.4 km in east-west direction and 10.0 km in south-north direction. Variable grid system was employed and grid spacing are 10 m ∼ 200 m. Total computation grids are 40,387. Through verifications of water circulations, tide levels from numerical computations are corresponded to observations, and tidal currents have discrepancies 14 % at PC1 and 10 % at PC2, meaning that numerical simulations of this study reproduce tide and tidal currents well. Wave field computations were carried out by SWAN model. In order to enhance computational accuracy of ocean wave phenomena such as developing due to wind, propagation, wave breaking, refraction, etc., computational domains were expanded to a offshore grid point (056113). As a result, waves are well propagated to Kkotji beach, and refractions due to water depth and shoaling effects are well simulated. As tide level decrease, wave decrement effects increase. Numerical computations for a morphological change were conducted to verify present situation by considering wave, nearshore current, and tidal current and to predict morphological characteristics of countermeasure of coastal erosion. Topography surveys indicate that coastal erosions are predominant in the vicinity of the shoreline, but depositions are prevalent in the vicinity of the low waterline. Computational results in this study are corresponding to survey results. As coastal erosion prevention, installation of interruption facility to longshore drift and sand backfill were examined. In sand backfill, erosions occur in front of backfill area. Most of eroded sands are deposited around mean waterline. Interruption facility to longshore drift controls southward sediment transport, and sand are stayed around interruption facility. According to results of study, demolition of structure at the rear of beach, interruption facility to longshore drift, and sand backfill are suggested as countermeasures of coastal erosions at Kkotji beach. Furthermore, consideration including results of monitoring the wind-blown sand at Kkotji beach and dredging of Bangpo port will be needed to ameliorate predictions for morphological variation. In order to prevent damages to coastal structure and loss of functionality as the bathing beach due to coastal erosion, it is necessary to protect the coastal environment by buffer zone at least 100 m from a boundary line of the beach.
