Abstract
A Study on the Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Titanium Metal Mixture Metal Dust Explosion in the Semiconductor Process
Park, Chang Sup (Supervisor Kim, Chan O) Dept. of Safety Engineering Graduate School Seoul National University of Science and Technology
In recent years, due to the mixture of combustible metal dust such as Al, Mg and etc., there is a tendency to increase the occurrence rate of human accidents and physical damage caused by the fire explosion that destroys the manufacturing lines and facilities. Currently, the generated titanium and aluminum dust during the semiconductor process are not collected through the piping. Despite that the dust collection facilities and the explosion prevention type safety device are used to prevent dust fire explosion accident in semiconductor manufacturing process, the perception of the risk of fire explosion due to the dust in Korea is relatively low compared to other countries. In addition, there were just few studies on the risk analysis and evaluation regarding the inclusion of the metal. Although regulations and standards are already established, we try to make every effort to manage and reinforce the standards by specific risk analysis and estimation. In this study, we suggest a risk management model for dust explosion in semiconductor manufacturing process by establishing safe and efficient fire explosion prevention measures through risk analysis for dust explosion. To do so, we made safety measures for dust explosion of dust collection facilities to remove dust effectively. Firstly, we reviewed the improvement of fire explosion accidents prevention caused by the generated dust in the semiconductor processes by applying international safety standards. Based on the review, we propose fundamental data to improve safety measures and level. Secondly, in order to investigate the risk of fire explosion of eight types of dust collected in the dust collector, we characterized the composition of the dust by following the EN International Standard Test method which is used for the dust explosion test. The characterization confirmed that there was no risk of dust explosion and fire explosion with the dusts. Thus, the dust collection process facility is safe during dust collection. Thirdly, the explosion characteristics of metal dust such as titanium contained powder that used in semiconductor process were investigated intensively. Specifically, the risk of fire explosion of titanium and other semiconductor dust mixture was selectively evaluated to investigate the risk of titanium dust collection with non-explosive dust in the dust collection process. The minimum concentration of explosion was 20% of titanium dust and 80% of other non-explosive dust. So, it was turned out that the fire explosion occurs if the titanium dust is more than 20%. The result made the point that it is necessary to prevent fire explosion in case of collecting titanium dust with 8 types of non-explosive dust. Fourthly, explosion simulation was carried out to figure out how much damage is expected to occur in the case of dust explosion during the handling of mixed dust of 20% titanium and 80% dust in semiconductor dust collection facilities. We assumed 15 Kg for the total generated daily dust weight and only 20% of Titanium dust involved in the fire explosion. It means the 600 g of titanium dust exploded considering the explosion efficiency of titanium component. In other words, only 20% of total titanium component weight, which is equivalent to 20% of the daily amount of dust generated, is involved in the dust explosion. The result of the calculation with the set condition confirmed that the fire explosion causes damage to the processing facility and the worker. So the preventive measures are mandatory. Finally, the safety of the process facilities was examined by field investigation of the dust collection facilities. In this paper, we propose safety improvement solutions for vacuum cleaner, cyclone, back filter, exhaust equipment, etc. Especially, we suggest the safety measures improvement solutions for the process equipment that have improper design, rack of explosion prevention and other safety issues. We are sure that the experimental data on the explosion risk of metal mixed dust in the semiconductor manufacturing process discussed in this study is very useful for the design, construction and operation of dust collection facilities. In addition, We expect that the improving the safety facility installation standards of the manufacturing site and eliminating the explosion risk due to the mixture of metal dust based on our study minimize the damage in case of dust and fire explosion.
